Pixar's Wall-E:The New E.T.?

Today, Pixar released the first full length US trailer for their upcoming blockbuster Wall-E, the story of a lonely but loveable trash robot left behind on Earth to clean up the mess the humans left behind. The movie looks stunningly beautiful (which should go without saying for a Pixar movie) and judging by the trailer, it has the one thing that lifts Pixar movies above the other studios: a whole lotta heart.

The star of the movie, Wall-E is at once both cute and vulnerable, something generally uncommon in a science fiction movie. While his character design may remind people more of Johnny Five from Short Circuit, Wall-E seems to be channeling the personality of another soulful title character: 1982's "E.T."

I'm not sure which parts I'm more excited about: the adorable interactions between the two robots, or the grand space epic that unfolds behind them. Even in the few minutes you see Wall-E, you kinda feel for the lil' guy, which is impressive because not only is he just a hunk of robotic circuitry - he's a fictional, digitally animated hunk of robotic circuitry.

It's that same empathy for the character that I think has been missing from the recent batch of 3D Animated films, who tend to eschew story for visual one-upmanship. It's a true testament to the skill of the Pixar animators that they can bring life and personality to a main character that doesn't have a "mouth" or "face" to speak of. It's all in the eyes, and what surprisingly emotional eyes they are.

Pixar's "Wall-E" hits US theaters on June 27th.

Will Wall-E stand up to the hype? Or is it doomed to the bargain bin next to Flight of the Navigator? Post a comment and let us know!

I've really been looking forward to this movie and think it will be one of Pixar's best. Though I haven't seen Cars, I believe they knock almost every movie out of the park (especially Brad Bird's offerings). I really think Ratatouille should have been nominated for Best Picture, not just Best Animated Feature. But that's just me, I love animation.

I've been curious to see the character designs for EVE and other locales so I'm quite pleased by this trailer.

By the way, Flight of the Navigator kicks ass. You've got Pee Wee Herman doing the robot's voice! How can it get better?

Flight of the Navigator was indeed awesome. To this day, when given a task, I will often mutter to myself "Compliance!" Unfortunately, it is also horribly dated - it's an eighties movie through and through.

I know Wall-E is going to be awesome this year, but will it be a classic(like E.T.)?

Wow that picture really does look like a cross between Johnny Five and ET. Disney Pixar films are always great so I'm really looking forward to seeing this :)

I also like that Pixar always makes kid movies that adults can enjoy - I crack up every time he puts that bra on his head.

Peter, I think that it is impossible to say something will be an iconic classic like ET. I think a movie like that comes once in a long while. In fact, I'm curious as to what would be considered the last major iconic movie like E.T. I lean towards The Matrix but the sequels left such a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I think Wall-E will be one of the best movies of the year but do not think it will be a classic on the level of E.T.

Since I have a vastly larger definition of "classic" than most people (I consider a lot of movies classics for many different reasons) I'd say I'm usually more forgiving.

Hmmm, last iconic movie I can think of? Well, sticking to animation, I'd say Incredibles, as it was a fresh and stylish look at the superhero genre. For films in general, I'd say Cloverfield definitely, as I sat enthalled for every single second of it and it's unlikely that I'll see another giant monster movie done that well in a long time. I would agree that the Matrix was iconic (I've also managed to completely banish the sequels in my mind) for many of the same reasons listed above: it was a refreshing and engrossing take on a familiar (some could say tired) genre.

I think an iconic movie manages what Brad Bird calls "the incredible and the mundane". It has moments of epic storytelling in a larger than life setting without forgetting the small and vulnerable characters at the heart of the story.

E.T. was iconic to me because it made me care (and yes, even cry - I was very young) about this little tiny alien and the growing friendship between him and Elliot. In the midst of spaceships, alien visitors, and government agencies, the movie is at heart the story of these two misunderstood weirdos finding a true friend in each other.

Cloverfield for all it's explosions, destruction, giant monsters, and army attacks is still just about a small group of friends and how they cope with the disaster. The Matrix, beyond the lobby scene and bullet-time is about a small group of aimless survivors finding in Neo a greater meaning and purpose for themselves.

With the giant science fiction background Wall-E is set in, and the love story in the middle of it all, I think it's quite possible that it could be an iconic film.

...or it could just be a cute little popcorn movie.

The eyes have it. I can understand how you would be impressed with Pixar's skill in emotional expression through eyes as it is one of the areas in which you excel in animation. This trailer is TERRIFIC!!! The capture of humor is also DELICIOUS. I can't wait!!!
