Oscars 2008: Who DID Win
Sunday, 24 February 2008
The results are in, but the epic struggle between man and machine continues.

In last months Oscar prediction article, entitled Oscars 2008: Who SHOULD Win and Who WILL Win, I pitted my warm-blooded contrarian human brain against the cold hard logic of computer calculated statistics to see who could more accurately pick Academy winners.

I suppose I could have used them to help cure cancer or solve world hunger, but this was much more fun.

So how did I do? Well, the battle between neurons and networks was a hard-fought one, with both sides taking heavy casualties. In the end, after the smoke is cleared, one thing is certain: there's still hope for all mankind.

Lost 4.4 Eggtown ReviewLOST
Eggtown
aka: "Kate Austin: Ho (fo' sho)"
by Peter Sorensen

In the fourth episode of Season Four, the complete and total mindf**k continues. Locke starts to lose it (if he ever had it in the first place), Kate uses her feminine wiles to arrange a meeting between Miles and Ben (and a meeting between her and Sawyer's sheets), and in the flashforward, Kate stands trial for her crimes.

If you're anything like me, you get a rush of adrenaline when there's a Kate-centric episode of Lost. Of course, if you're anything like me, you have a small closet in your house that you've turned into a Kate Austin love-shrine, complete with candles, an entire wall of Evangeline Lilly photos you took while hiding in her shrubs,  the glass she drank out of at the last promotional tour, and a lock of her hair that you snuck onto set to steal and then smuggled out of Hawaii underneath your baseball cap.

But I digress...

Heroes Comic: War Buddies Part 7 - Coming Home

Heroes Comic #73
This week's issue of the Heroes Graphic Novel is like a plastic peg leg: cheap and tacked on, but useful nonetheless.

If the title isn't a dead giveaway, this is the 7th part of a story arc (long since over) in which Noah Bennett contacts Hana Gittleman and tasks her with a mission to retrieve a very important file from the Company. In the file is the account of two soldiers in Vietnam (who turn out to be Arthur Petrelli and Daniel Linderman) on a covert mission to destroy an enemy asset. In their first meeting, Petrelli is injured in battle and Linderman heals him. Later, Linderman discovers their their true target isn't an enemy base, but a young Vietnamese girl with the amazing ability to instantly grow food from the soil. Linderman tries to save her, but in the ensuing battle she is shot and killed.

Upon returning from the mission, Petrelli reports the truth about the incident and is silently drummed out of the Army as a crackpot. Years later, Linderman tracks him down and offers him a chance to join a very special group, one with the goal of tracking and helping people with special abilities: The Company.

This week, we find out that there's more to the story than we thought.

Lost: The EconomistLOST
The Economist
aka: "The name's Jarrah. Sayid Jarrah."
by Peter Sorensen

In the third episode of Season Four, the complete and total mindf**k continues. Sayid makes a deal to rescue Charlotte in return for safe passage back to the Boat, Miles conducts a mind-boggling experiment, the Lockies make it to the barracks, and Kate makes a very surprising decision.

It's official: the longer this show runs, the less and less sense it makes.

Seriously, what the hell? It's confusing, convoluted, mysterious, vague, complicated, and obtuse. Every episode seems to add more and more questions and plunges us further and further into a vast chasm of supernatural science fiction where the laws of physics seem not to apply and people speak with spirits.

And you know what? I'm loving every single minute of it.

1 Year and Counting!
Thursday, 14 February 2008
BleepingGeek.comIt was exactly 365 days  ago that I embarked on a brand new project: a little website by the name of BleepingGeek.com.

Born on February 14th, 2007 the site started as a place for me to present my weekly reviews, thoughts, and theories on Heroes and Lost, and although the site itself has changed, the basics are still there: fun, informative reviews and community-driven discussion.

And yes, I know that today is supposedly some other holiday (some unnaturally commercial holiday based on several archaic saints that I don't celebrate), but I say that we hereby name today "Bleeping Geek Day".

As always, your donations are greatly appreciated and if you want to buy me a drink to celebrate, now is the time (shameless begging for money, a new birthday tradition).

I'd like to thank all of my readers and especially the site regulars who make writing for the site worthwhile (you know who you are). You guys make the site what it is, and I thank you for it. It's been a great first year, and there's even more to look forward to in 2008.
