| Who Should Play Captain America? |
| Monday, 19 May 2008 | |
![]() Update: Marvel has announced the writers and director for this movie and you can read a review of their choices right here: "Captain America Gets a Creative Team" or you can see my #1 choice for casting and a costume design here: "I've Picked My Captain America (and made a costume!)" Earlier this month, Marvel Studios announced their next four upcoming projects, which including Iron Man 2, Thor, an Avengers movie, and most importantly: a live action Captain America movie, set to debut in 2011. Tentatively (and horribly) titled "The First Avenger: Captain America", it's being set up to either be a rousing success or a crushing failure. The odd choice for director (Nick Cassavetes, director of The Notebook and the horrible Justin Timberlake vehicle Alpha Dog), the unnecessary Avengers branding (why not just call it Captain America?), and the current rumors regarding casting (more on this below) put this movie squarely on my "maintain vigilance" list of possibly terrible superhero movies (it's right under The Hulk, but before Spiderman 4: Electric Boogaloo). So my question to all of you out there is this: "Who do you think should play Captain America"? To begin with, let's go over a few criteria (or my criteria, at least):
To aid in the selection process, I've thrown together (quickly, you may notice) a list of potential candidates in the iconic cowl (or a hastily scribbled version of it at least). Now, before the fanboys start pouring out of the woodwork to refute these choices, I will explain: this short list is made up of a combination of sources. Some of the actors below simply fit the physical description. Others are actors that are predominantly being suggested by fans in various comic book and movie forums. Two of them are currently rumored to be in talks with Marvel to play Cap (see if you can you guess which ones). And yes, there's even Ryan Reynolds, for no other reason than I want to see him in a superhero movie of some kind (although Flash or Deadpool would be my personal choices). ![]() Now, not that most of you will need it (the actors above are pretty obvious, but if you can't tell who some of these people are, just click below: Daaaayum. I hate to say it (because it seems like he's in everything lately) but I'm going to have to go with Gerard Butler(G) on this one. Not only does he have the Cap chin, he has the perfect blend of charm and steely determination. And the voice? Umm, have you seen 300? If he can command an army of Spartans, I'm pretty sure he can lead the Avengers. True, there would be the inevitable parodies ("This.. is... AMERICAAAAAAA!") but he's shown in almost every one of his films that he has the acting chops to carry a serious dramatic role, and has the breezy likability to keep an audience cheering for him. He's someone you'd not only like, but respect as well. It's weird too. Until I made the above images, I was actually rooting for Daniel Craig. He's got the physical look down, and he's an excellent actor with a good sense of humor (seriously, just watch Casino Royale and imagine him in a Captain America costume during the action scenes). Craig even has the steely blues of someone who's seen hell and the ridiculous superhero chin. Once I drew that mask on Butler though, it was all over. "That's Captain America", I said to myself. As for the Avengers movie (which Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man 2 will tie into), I can definitely see him acting as a foil to Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark, and ordering around whoever they get to play Thor. I could even see him taking down The Hulk, who basically just looks like a green Jared Leto on steroids anyways. But (and there's always a but) I won't get my hopes up. Currently, rumors are stating that 2 of the actors above are actually in discussion with Marvel to play the classic hero: Brad Pitt, who hasn't shown any interest whatsoever, and Matthew McConaughey. Yes, you read that right: Matthew "Well all right, all right" McConaughey. Matthew "Naked Bongos" McConaughey. Matthew "same character in everything" McConaughey. Ugh. Maybe Marvel can add another movie to their roster: a Captain America/Daredevil movie in which McConaughey and Ben Affleck throw a far out kegger at the Moontower. Maybe Wiley Wiggins can play Bucky Barnes. Comments (67)

Brad Pitt and Matthew MCConaughey, spare me, please!! And no Ben Aufleck or his buddy. Your Gerard with mask does look good here, and I admit, I've only really seen his work in Nim's Island, but I wasn't all that impressed. And he's from Scotland, and maybe he can internalize the character...but I have my doubts. I'd offer Keanu Reeves. He may not be blond, but hey, try the mask on him and let's see what you think.

OK...well try on Josh Lucas for mask? Whatayathink? This casting is going to be tricky because Captain America isn't just a kid's comic book. The film will play to all the ages, because Captain America was hero even back to us old farts. It's like we're all breathing down Hollywood's neck to be sure they pick someone that can be true to character...OUR Captain America.

Let me first state that I have never been a fan of Captain America and no virtually nothing about the character other than the fact that he was recently killed off.
Peter, is this movie supposed to take place in modern times? Without getting into politics, I find it hard to believe this movie won't flop because of the current climate. I think there is a lot of built up tension towards the traditional idea of America during the late 20th century. While many citizens still deeply love this country, I think they also have issue with how some symbols like the flag have been somewhat hijacked by certain ideologies. I don't think it matters who the actor is, I think this movie will not meet expectations. I'm sure it will do decently, but I don't think it will surpass $200 million in domestic box office. I also think The Incredible Hulk will not meet expectations because HULK is far too near in most people's memory. I hope I'm wrong, but I think the superhero movie genre is so over-saturated (like the fantasy genre is becoming) that the proverbial bubble will pop. But what do I know? I'm a software developer, not a studio player. I think the best bet would be to focus the Captain America movie on the era of his origins and finish it with him being frozen and brought to modern times. That way we have a fitting introduction getting people invested in the character and way to bring him into modern times.

@manzy704 - I'm pretty sure that the Captain America film will do well here in the states, but flop internationally (not that I could blame them with our current black eye in the international community). That being said, I'm hoping because it's called "The First Avenger" that it will indeed be an origin story with Cap going through the experiments that gave him his powers and then tossing the smack down to Red Skull and the Nazi's in WWII. I think most audiences could get behind an anti-Nazi message, no matter how "propaganda-ish" the lead hero is.
Plus, there's not a lot of superhero movies set in the 20s-40s (The Rocketeer is the only one that comes to mind), so that might help it's chances in an oversaturated superhero movie market. Because I'm an optimist, I'm giving The Hulk a 15% chance that it doesn't suck. The trailers are totally uninspiring, but who knows? Maybe the story is doubly awesome to make up for it. @SkrullDavid - Guy's got one hell of a superhero chin, what can I say? Glad to know I'm not alone on that one.

I'd be all for a story that centered around his origins and struggle against the Nazis. I think there is an excellent chance The Incredible Hulk won't suck but I think it will do poorly because audiences remember 2003's HULK.
I didn't have any interest in seeing Batman Begins whatsoever until I started hearing all the good word of mouth. It is now what I considered to be the pinnacle of superhero flicks.

And Speed Racer? As Don Roritor in Brain Candy once said, "I had such... high hopes". Turned out to be not as great as I would have liked it to be. I still may review it at some point in the near future, but it will probably be more of a "what Speed Racer did wrong" kind of article.

Who ever Plays Cap is going to have to have the look of a perfect physical Form. Cap is the human body at perfection. Michael Keaton in a suit type is not going to work. This guy needs to have the "look" to make Captain America work.
|| June 18, 2008
Peter wrote...
@Rick - While I agree that whoever plays him has to be in top physical shape, the common description of Cap from the comics (and the basis for how they draw him) is that of an Olympic-level gymnast. He's strong, sure - but he's also very fast and agile.
So I worry about trying to fill the role with someone who's too built, like a weightlifter. The film Cap is going to have to be strong, but he's also going to have to look very swift and be able to pull of any number of signature Cap moves - like motorcycle jumps, somersault flips, spin kicks, etc... this is a guy who's at his perfect physical peak and has been trained to be the most effective hand-to-hand fighter in the world.

I think the most important thing is Cap's image. As long as the actor is built well (and I agree he shouldn't be really big) and looks athletic and strong when he moves, then that part will be beilivable. He just needs to have that pure-hearted, wise, battle-tested, "Greatest Generation", commanding air about him. That's why I think Leo's too young. Pitt's too "Ocean's 11" cool, and Mark Valley is just a little on the pretty side (although I could live with him). To me, Cap needs a little more leather to him. I don't know what his contract will or won't allow him to do but I'm just stuck on Eckhart for the role. Just take a look at this mug!

It makes me curse the fact that Guy Pearce turned down the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face in The Dark Knight, or I'm sure we could get Eckhart to come over to the Marvel side. For some reason your pic didn't link right, so here it is so that everyone else can see "the chin" in action:

Okay, out of the list of actors given, id have to say Gerard butler or Matt Damon. However, i have two alternate choices. One that meets all of those criteria and one that meets some. The first being Nathan Filian. Look at his role in Fire Fly. He has a loud commanding voice and presence as well as the ability to cheer up his unit with some laughter. The other is Mark Valley. Just google his pictures and watch a few episodes of boston legal. YOull thank me. He has two problems though, a little too old, and a little short.

@willie - Trust me, as a longtime Browncoat and general Joss Whedon fanboy, I wanted to include Nathan Fillion on the list... oh boy did I want to. I just couldn't do it. The first strike was when I put the mask on him. He has a very unique brow and eyes, and behind a rubber latex mask, he looks... uncomfortable.
Secondly, I just couldn't picture him in the role. Nathan Fillion is a phenomenal actor, but he's at his best when he plays truly unique characters - people who are good at heart and do the right thing, but who are inherently flawed and human. I just can't see him playing Cap - someone who is a total Boy Scout in every way (which is what puts him at odds against other people - he's almost too perfect). I could see Fillion playing a deeper character like Batman or Hawkeye (he'd make a great Hawkeye). I keep hearing Mark Valley - I just don't see it. He's good on Boston Legal, I just don't see him as the superhero type.

Okay - lemme go over the most recent batch of suggestions (all good, by the way).
This is just my opinion: Gabriel Macht - He has the right look, might need to bulk up a bit. Casper Van Dien - Doesn't have the acting chops (again - just my opinion). Plus, I'm pretty sure that Marvel is going to be looking for either a complete unknown or an A-List star. Matthew Fox - looked great in superhero gear, but I think he's too recognizable as Jack for an audience to see him another way. I'd always be wondering whether Cap was going to save the rest of the survivors. lol Jon Hamm - I dunno, I just don't see it. Mark Valley - At first I was skeptical, but I'm really digging him on Fringe, so maybe. My only concern is that he might look a little too mature. While Cap was only 18 when he was given the super soldier serum and probably 22 or so when he got frozen, I like to think that he looks like a 30-something in peak physical shape. Not too bulky (he's not the Hulk lol), just extremely fit. With a little work and some good makeup I think Mark Valley would do okay. John Cena - What do I think about John Cena? I think he can't act. Plus, I can't see Marvel handing off their larget potential franchise to an ex-wrestler. Jake Gyllenhaal - Seriously? (takes a moment) ...seriously? Bruce Willis - 20 years ago, maybe - he even has the New York accent. Now? Not a chance, waaaay too old to be Cap.
