| Green Lantern Gets Green Light |

![]() This comes as a bit of a shock to fans, as the last known Green Lantern project was scrapped years ago (and for good reason - it had David Boreanaz attached to it and skipped a large part of the Green Lantern mythos). While no writers, directors, or actors have been announced, I feel it my solemn duty as a comic book geek to give the producers a (not so) gentle nudge in the right direction: It All Starts on the Written PageThe keys to making a successful Green Lantern movie are numerous, but far from impossible to grasp. First, it has to be about the original (and greatest) human Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. Second, it has to cover the origin story, introduce some of the major players, and bring about a major conflict and resolution while setting events in motion for future movies (WB loves a good franchise). It should reward fans of the comic book series, while introducing people to the material for the first time in an intelligent and exciting way.For a writer, I'd like to see someone with a knack for snappy dialogue who can write large, interstellar action as well as personal one-on-one scenes. My top picks would be Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), David Howard (Galaxy Quest), or Joss Whedon (Serenity). Hal Jordan The fate of the movie ultimately rests in the casting of it's main character - Harold "Hal" Jordan, a second-generation test pilot. He is given a power ring and battery (the lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur, whose spaceship crash lands on Earth. Hal is tasked by Abin Sur to take his place as Green Lantern - a kind of interstellar guardian for that sector of space, including Earth. I can think of no better actor to portray Hal - brash, witty, and charming - than Captain Mal himself, Nathan Fillion. Besides being physically correct for the role, he has the perfect personality for the sometimes infuriatingly smug Jordan, a "rocket jockey" who prefers to live life on the edge. Carol Ferris Carol Ferris, the VP of Ferris Aircraft, took over the day to day operations from her father, aerospace mogul Carl Ferris. As most of the pilots quit (refusing to work with a woman in charge), Carol convinces Hal Jordan to stay on as her new test pilot, but immediately regrets her decision as he proves to be hard to work with, and nearly crashes during his first flight.Strong, willful, beautiful, and stubborn with a hidden sensitivity - only one name comes to mind to play Carol: Carla Gugino. There's no one I'd rather see butt heads with Hal Jordan. She has the emotional range and personality to play Hal's love interest without becoming simply arm candy. Sinestro Friend to Abin Sur and a well-respected member of the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro befriends the inexperienced Hal Jordan and is assigned by the Guardians of Oa to be his instructor. With his help, Hal defends the planet of Oa against invasion by a race of alien warlords, and takes his place as a hero.My choice for the perfect Sinestro is Hugo Weaving. Better known as Agent Smith from the Matrix movies (or Elrond from LotR, if you prefer another genre), Weaving has the exact qualities essential for a perfect Sinestro - a man who becomes friends with Hal, only to later become one of his greatest villains. He's perfect for the role because it would be refreshing to see him as a good guy, and even more satisfying to watch his eventual fall from grace into villainy (what can I say - he plays a good bad guy). If you need any more proof, I submit the following image from the internet: ![]() I rest my case. The Supporting CastThe best part about the Green Lantern series is the extraordinarily large and varied supporting cast that presents itself in the Green Lantern Corps. Based on the planet Oa, these characters could lead to some great cameos in the first movie, and possibly larger roles in following installments. For instance, I'd love to see someone like Bradley Cooper play Guy Gardner, or Ron Perlman (in heavy prosthetics) as Killiwog (couldn't imagine anyone else calling someone a "Poozer" without it sounding cheesy). All in all, this is like any other comic book movie: handled correctly and by the right people, it will be a runaway success. Mishandled or given over to someone who doesn't respect the origins of the character, and it will be a disaster. Thoughts? Casting Ideas? Choice of Director? Post a comment below and let us know!
