I've Picked My Captain America (and made a costume!)

So there I was, watching footage from Comic-Con, and I happened upon a video of Joss Whedon talking about his favorite fight scene from the first season of Dollhouse. As it happens, it was the scene where Agent Ballard and Echo finally run into each other in the restaurant and proceed to beat the living hell out of each other in the kitchen, complete with knives, pots & pans, and even a glass refrigerator door.

As Joss wrapped up the video, he thanked his lucky stars that Tahmoh Penikett (Agent Ballard) was already signed to his show because "he would have made a great Terminator".

And that's when it hit me... or a great Captain America.

As you may remember, I've already gone through a list of potential candidates for the role of Captain America, which you can see here. However, it seems like the Powers-That-Be are continuing to look for an actor who's a bit younger than the ones I added to my list. So, I went back and made a new list. It had a bevy of popular younger actors on it (including Captain Awesome from Chuck), but the entire list was obsolete once I set upon Tahmoh Penikett.

He has the build, he has the ridiculous superhero chin. He's got the acting chops (as he proved on Battlestar Galactica, as well as a variety of other starring and cameo roles). Plus, he has that weird blend of aggression and charisma that makes you want to follow his orders, but also maybe grab a beer with him afterwards. He's likable, but stern. And, as an added bonus, he has that elusive bit of cultural zeitgeist going for him since - as Helo on BSG - he's already portrayed a military man willing to stand by his superiors, it shouldn't be too much of a leap to see him play a similar character as Cap.

So, I sat down and started sketching. What began as a simple "what would he look like with the mask on" image quickly evolved into a full-blown concept art session involved at least two dozen reference images and photographs. I thought to myself, "Self - if you were going to make a costume for the Captain America movie, what would it look like?"

Of course, then I slapped myself and told myself that with any luck the Captain America movie will take place in WWII and will have Cap in his old school military uniform with the chinstrap and rifle.

So I decided to come up with one for the upcoming Avenger's movie instead. I figure that they will thaw Cap's frozen body out in the present for the final scenes of his title movie, and then Nick Fury (along with some help from Tony Stark) will go about designing and updating a new costume for him. I tried to keep as much of the original design as I could (which Jack Kirby designed as a tribute to a knight's armor) while making it out of acceptable modern materials.

So here you go - my costume design for Cap's costume in the forthcoming Avenger's film, starring my choice for Captain America, Tahmoh Penikett:

Shield is too small, leather costume looks like a motocross suit, and I don't like the babyface in the mask which proves you need an actor who doesn't look 19. Cap was always portrayed as a man in his thirties. The overall design is cool concept except I don't like the blue in the gloves. I think it shows though if they decide to got with a leather suit in a film it will look terrible.

@adamking - Yeah, it's a mashup of a ton of different photo references. I used the basic body from Daredevil and then redid the suit and a lot of the seams from there.

@mike80 - The shield is the correct size proportionally (all the reference images I found show it to be about mid-thigh to just below mid-bicep). As for age, Cap was about 25 when he became Cap, and fought for about 3 years before the Baron Zemo incident that ended with him encased in ice. When they revived him, they noted that the Super Soldier Serum drastically reduces the effects of aging, so he's supposed to look like mid 20s- early 30s.

Like the article says (and the precursor article HERE) I originally picked people more in that age bracket for my choices. However, all sources from Marvel point towards them looking for someone much younger looking, either because they want Cap to look younger, or because they are trying to find someone who won't age as drastically over the next 5 or 6 years while they make several Cap movies. Chris Pine was rumored to be up for the role, as well as Captain Awesome from Chuck (both of whom have baby faces as well). I simply picked someone who would fit their current criteria, but who I could see actually playing Cap and growing into the role with time.

Not to mention that Tahmoh Penikett looks considerably older and more manly now. The picture I used for reference was from a few years back (it was the only one I could find of good quality that was turned at the right angle).

Anyway, thanks to both of you for your comments!

All I can say is..."Ohhhhh YEAH!" I'm with you Pete. I think Tahmoh Penikett would make a great choice. Love the texture on the torso and gloves. The belt is "an especially nice touch." Great detailing. (Curious about footwear)

I like the costume a lot but I really think that CAP should be played by an American actor. Jensen Ackles would be good or perhaps Aaron Eckhart(but he might be too old) And I saw a play recently in LA with an actor who would be really good and hopefully his agent will get him an audition. His name is Matt Biedel and he's been on Heroes and a few other shows and he is tall and ripped and he was great in the play. He played a badass soldier and he was freaky good. I found a link to his IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2560926/

This looks awesome...you did a fantastic job. Very good combination of old and new concepts. I do have to agree, though, that the shield is a little small. Your right when you say it is accurate according what is pictured in the comics, but I have one sideshow collectible Marvel authorized shield replicas that was manufactured according to Marvel's size specs and it is considerably bigger. Very minor detail for the sake of this pic though. As far as casting goes, I think this is one of the most important decisions to be made in the area of super hero movies. The actor that lands this part really needs to have that aura confidence and leadership. I still haven't decided in my mind who I would really like to see, but I guess you could say that one person who pops to mind is Channing Tatum.
