Trailershock - "1-18-08"

TrailerShock is a brand new feature that I'm kicking off here at BleepingGeek that will showcase the kind of trailers that not only make you want to watch the movie, but literally stun you into submission. Think back to the first time you saw the Matrix trailer. The first trailer for Star Wars.

That, my friends, is TrailerShock, and we're kicking it off with one hell of an entry. Rumors are flying about the new J.J. Abrams project which fans are calling "1-18-08", and which is referred to inhouse at the studio as "Cloverfield" or "The Parasite".

Apparently, the trailer is only being shown in certain cities, in front of Transformers. Plus, it hasn't been "officially" released, so the only copy I could find is from some dude's cell phone camera:

Holy Mary, Mother of God.

There are so many things I frikkin' love about this trailer, I can't even begin to say them all in this tiny little column.

Here's the top 5:

  1. The shock. You think it's just an innocent movie about some trendy kids, then wham! ROARROAOARWWWRARRR! BOOM! What the fuck was that?!!?
  2. The concept. The only rumors so far is that this movie will be a monster movie, but not in a slam bam special effects kind of way. It will focus not on the actual monster, but on peoples reaction to the attack and what happens during it. Brilliant!!! This is the kind of theme I like to see!
  3. The "Oh-Shit-factor". There is no way to describe how I felt during that scene where they are on the roof and you suddenly see that gigantic explosion in the middle of the city. Or when they are down on the street and the head of the Statue of Liberty comes crashing down. In a way, it kinda reminded me of the footage from 9-11 where everyone was just fleeing in terror. I am the kind of person that doesn't scare easily, and this frightened the hell out of me.
  4. The monster. Just like in Alien, J.J. Abrams gets it right here where he proves that monsters are scarier when you DON'T SEE THEM. Things are always more chilling when you only catch glimpses, little bits. When you see the resulting carnage, but not what caused it. This is what the Godzilla remake should have been like.
  5. The creative team. J.J. Abrams definitely chose a good team for this. Both are TV alumni from shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost, so expect a lot of high intensity action mixed with a little humor.

Rumors are flying! Some people are saying it's the new Godzilla movie (God I hope not). Some people are saying it's a Lost tie-in movie (judging solely by the team) that shows what happens when the Losties leave the island. Some people are saying that it's a remake of The Host (which was a great movie by the way).

All the studio and creator are saying is that it's "a giant monster movie (the monster itself is referred to as "The Parasite") that is shot using home video cameras from the point of view of people who are experiencing an attack on New York City."

Nothing else.

It's not often I see a trailer that literally shuts down my central nervous system. I stammered for about twenty minutes before I let loose a total verbal barrage.

I'm keeping an eye (or two) on this one.
