"Teen Titans" Casting Couch

image Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that they will be working on a live-action adaption of DC Comics' superteam Teen Titans.

Mark Verheiden has been brought on board to write the script. If the name doesn't sound familiar, Mark Verheiden was a writer-producer on "Smallville," the TV series that revolved around the adventures of a young Clark Kent/Superman, and is a writer-producer on "Battlestar Galactica." Verheiden also is a comic writer and creator, penning "Timecop" and "The Mask," both of which were adapted to the big screen in the early 1990s.

And somehow, this all actually makes sense to me.

This comic has already been made into a kid-friendly version in the form of Cartoon Networks "Teen Titans Go!" animated series, but from the sounds of it, this version will aim more for that ever important 18-35 year old demographic.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

It is not known which heroes will be used, but Nightwing is said to be in the mix.

Goldsman said the tone will be consistent with such recent Warners' comic book fare as "Batman Begins," "Superman Returns" and the upcoming "Watchmen."

As much as I'm against comic book movies being made solely to cash in on the current movie trends, I think this could actually be good. It's a lot harder to take a very popular character, such as Superman or Batman, and make a successful film that stays true to the comic book while entertaining the American audience. Proof of this is the repugnant "Spiderman 3", a movie which failed on every intelligent level imaginable, but yet had enough lame special effects and emo appeal that it raked in box office dollars like a fat guy going for buffalo wings at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

But take a lesser superhero that's not as popular (or in this case a team of superheroes) and the strain is surprisingly lessened. If this movie bombs, then it's not really that big a deal. I don't know many diehard Teen Titan fans. But, if it succeeds then it could pave the way for bigger and better superhero team movies, like the constantly suggested Justice League movie.

I took a moment and thought about who I'd like to see as the cast of the new Teen Titan movie, and here are my picks:

Image

Nightwing

James McAvoy: Most importantly, as with all of these choices, he's got the look. Past that, he has the acting chops to play the Dark Knights ex-sidekick. Also, as a bonus, he has the physicality for the role, as evidenced by his role as Leto II in Children of Dune.

Image

Troia/Wonder Girl

Hayden Panatierre: And not just because I think she's smoking hot as a brunette. She has the acting ability, and the sweet, kind, All American appeal that's necessary for the role. She's the MaryAnne to Starfire's Ginger. Plus, she'd look awesome with the lasso.

Image

Kid Flash

Sam Huntington: Even though he's already in a superhero franchise (he played Jimmy Olsen in Superman Returns), he has the kind of quirky, self deprecating humor that is necessary to play Kid Flash. He may be a little cocky, he may not take anything serious, but he's an important part of the team.

Image

Beast Boy

Shia LaBeouf: As Hollywood's current "It" guy, it would be nice to see him take the backseat to someone else for a change and participate in a good cast movie again. He's got the sense of humor, he's got the slightly geeky vibe going, and I think he has what it takes to be the fuzzy heart of the team.

Image

Starfire

Elisha Cuthbert: Now this is only because I think she's smoking hot. I can't think of any other actress in the age range that I would rather see stuffed into that tiny little spandex outfit. Rowrrrrr.

Image

Cyborg

Lee Thompson Young: I don't really think he's right for the role, but he's played the part on Smallville, and until they clone a younger version of Ving Rhames, he's the only young black actor that I can think of that would do the role justice, and not try to turn Cyborg into some kind of hiphop stereotype.

So there ya go. My picks for the cast of Teen Titans. As long as it sticks to the following rules, it should be OK:

1. It's a DRAMA. Keep it that way. You can add humor and action in there as much as you want, but compelling character drama is what's going to make or break your movie.

2. Special effects need to stay special. Use them sparingly. If you have special effects in every single shot, they're not "special" effects, they're "constant" effects. And on a lesser note, CGI is no replacement for the real thing. Shoot everything you can, and only digitally create things you can't shoot in real life.

3. Stay true to the source. I know you will have to fudge things a little to make them more "cinematic", but the truer you are to the material, the better the final product is going to be. Moviegoers see a movie once or twice. Fanatics will see it twelve times, tell their friends, start fansites, and tattoo your name on their butts. Aim for the fanatics. A popular cult flick is always better than a box office bomb.

4. Humor. You can't make a comic book movie without a little humor. Eschew lame one-liners and snappy patter for real, intelligent humor. Point out your characters obvious foibles. Engage them in uncomfortable situations. Derive humor from the characters and the situation, not the other way around.

how about a new out of the blue actress who can portray an innocent yet dark persona of RAVEN as portrayed in the comics, tv show both old and new. That would be the best way to go...also her body type must match or come damnnear close to hers. In the movie biz, consistancy is a must. Sadly it as my dream to write and probably direct Teen Titans the live action movie...unfortunately someone got to it before me smilies/sad.gif But this wont drag me down, my main dream is to become a director/producer(I love movies, therefore I'm shooting for a job in the movie biz as a D/P, editor, & screenplay writer. (Sorry I'm ranting. But here's some food for thought. How about a new actress who oddly looks like Kate Beckinsale with her Salene outfit from Underworld mixed with a new Raven cloak/trench coat.) smilies/cool.gif Happy thoughts!

I agree with you on James McAvoy as NightWing but I also think Milo Ventimiglia in the hit TV show Heroes as Peter could pull it off to. Sence hes also mentioned in a interview on his other upcoming flicks Armored, and Crank 2 that his dream superhero role to play NightWing and that if they held auditions he would go try out. I definitley think your right about the rest of the cast especially Cyborg I would really perfer Lee Thompson Young for the role then I also think either Columbus Short from Stomp the Yard or Texas Battle from Coach Carter and Hills Have Eyes 2 could probably pull it off but Lee has played the role before and did a pretty good job. But yeah Lee is the definte man for the job. Now StarFire, the girl for that role is really good for the part but I think Christina Milian could do the role sence she has the sexy look and nice bronze color as Starfire does and good has been doing acting sence she was a kid so she has more experience and seems perfect. You really did choose the perfect person for Beast Boy Shia has the funny personality and the look for character. Kid Flash I would get either Chris Evans from The Fantastic Four or the guy you picked then again now I would say Sean William Scott from The Rundown movie with The Rock could pull it off perfectly to. Now the villians I would perfer DeathStorke aka Slade to be played by either Jason Statham or Bruce Willis then for another like FreakShow could be played by Jack Black. But no matter if they pick the perfect cast its nothing without a good script and director but by the way it sounds there going for a dark realistic movie the blockbuster summer hit Batman Begins which is wonderful news which means there already going in the right direction for the live action superhero movie.
