"Choke" gets the Heimlich

Choke coverIt's being reported on the author's official fansite that after years of speculation, failed attempts, fan requests, and hard work, Chuck Palahniuk's controversial novel "Choke" has been given the green light and will be going into production soon.

For those of you unfamiliar with the novel, it centers around a main character that only Chuck P could create. Vincent Mancini is a med-school dropout sex addict who works in a colonial theme park and intentionally chokes on food at restaurants to scam the people who save him so that he can take care of his Alzheimers-riddled mother.

Oh yeah, and he's also the direct descendant of Jesus Christ.

If that isn't enough of a reason for you to run out and buy the book, see the movie, and devote your life to Chuck P's early work, then how about this (taken from the site):

This is a big one. Chuck emailed me a few days ago to give me the exclusive news that Choke is going into production on June 18th! Sam Rockwell is set to star, and first-timer Clark Gregg will be directing. A little history on Gregg: He wrote the Robert Zemeckis thriller What Lies Beneath and, as an actor, is a regular on the hit TV show The New Adventures of Old Christine. Gregg adapted Choke into screenplay form and has been championing the project for years now. God bless him and his tenacity as the film has finally been greenlit for production and Gregg will be getting his debut in the directing chair. Chuck also went on to tell me that the mom is most likely Glenn Close, Annette Benning or Juliana Moore.

Although I've been trying to convince his fans for years that Billy Crudup is the perfect choice for Vincent Mancini, I have to bow down here and admit that the idea of Sam Rockwell as the sex addict messiah makes me giggly like a little schoolgirl.

I'm a little concerned about the future of Chuck P movies being placed in the hands of a first time director, but then again even Scorsese had to start somewhere. I'm definitely looking forward to more info on this when it becomes available.

If this actually goes through, this should be every bit as amazing as Fight Club was.

I loved this book. I'm interested to see how the adaptation pans out.
