In the third episode of Season Five, Desmond's search for Faraday's mother brings him face to face with an old acquaintance. Daniel tries to defuse a leaking atomic bomb while Locke seeks out Richard Alpert for more answers. Desmond"Brutha" is a "Fatha"! The introductory scene with Desmond racing through the fishing village in search of a doctor had me worried for the sake of ol' "Pen" (who I am convinced is not long for this world) but instead turns out to be because she's giving birth to his son, who they eventually name Charlie (which is bittersweet because I'd like to think he's named after the Charlie, but it's also Charles Widmore's name as well). There is a charming little tongue-in-cheek scene (which I'm sure was the cause of many a guffaw in the writers room) wherein Desmond tells his son about a "very special island"... called Great Britain and Penny expresses her concern that revealing themselves may put themselves in danger. Gee, really? Let's consider this for a moment... how many women have given birth on the show and not subsequently died? The odds are 50/50.![]() 'How's my totally inconspicuous, not-at-all noticeable outfit working?' Desmond heads back to the boat and tells Penny that it's all over, but she knows him better than that and even after he tells her he'd leave it all behind for her, she makes the decision to go with him to Los Angeles.... ohhh, that's not going to be good... LockeOne of the things I'm loving most about this season is the way that it's not only referencing, but ofttimes explaining previous episodes. It's revealed that the people in the Army uniforms are actually Others, and when Juliet tries to get information from one, his buddy (who's wearing a tag that says "Jones" on it) snaps his neck and then makes a run for it. Locke clearly has a shot and can kill him at any time, but doesn't because "he's one of my people". When we later learn that "Jones" is none other than Charles friggin' Widmore himself, it suddenly makes sense - just like Daniel said in the last episode: "if it didn't happen, it can't happen". Locke couldn't shoot Widmore because Widmore didn't die on the island that day. I know, it all gets a little zen here and there.![]() 'Nope. I don't know who's compass it is now either...' This explains why Richard Alpert was there that day, it also explains the "Dalai Lama" test that Richard gave to Locke and why he seemed so disappointed when Locke didn't choose the compass - Richard thought it belonged to Locke when in reality Richard would give it to an injured Locke years in the future. It also explains how Richard knew that Locke would be their leader when he landed on the island - if someone had visited me in the past, told me he'd be my leader in the future, prophesied their own birth, failed an initiation test as a boy, but then mysteriously showed up on my island anyway through no fault of my own... well, I'd be inclined to believe him too. WidmoreFirst, let me just say that I am still totally freaking out that Widmore was an Other. That's as good a twist as finding out Vader is Luke's father for crying out loud! And just like the rest of the season so far - one little clue and a bevy of answers start falling into place. Now we know why Widmore is so occupied with getting to the island: he's trying to return to it. It also explains a little about his feud with Ben, an outsider who took over leadership of the Others and I'm guessing may have had something to do with Widmore leaving the island. Now we know why Widmore seems to know so much about Dharma and why Ben couldn't kill him - the island has rules about who lives or dies (as we saw with Michael and the gun last season).![]() 'If I don't get my pony... I shall simply die.' But with every question answered, more questions arise: How, why, and when did Widmore leave the island? Was he born on the island? Was Penny born on the island, or off? We know that people used to be able to have children on the island as late as the 70s (Marvin Candle had an infant son, remember?) so it's possible that Penny (and Penny's mother) were Others too. And if we're going down that road - who is Penny's mother and what happened to her? Did Widmore "change the rules" by bringing in someone from the outside to kill Alex? Does Ben's plan to kill Penny involve having someone else do it for him? The mind boggles at the possibilities... DanielMore and more it seems like Daniel is not only an important player in the fate of the island, but one of the key players. He sends Desmond to find his mother, who happens to be in L.A. (where Mrs. Eloise Hawking is), then is sent into the past where he runs into "Ellie", who is an Other, but also reminds Daniel of someone he knows. When he mentions this, she asks if it's another girlfriend of his, and he says "far from it". If anyone hasn't figured it out yet, Ellie is probably short for Eloise, which means that Mrs. Hawking is definitely Daniel's mother. He also named his rat in the maze Eloise if you want further proof (although naming a rat after your mom is a little sketchy).![]() 'You can point your guns at me, but I'll never take off this tie.' In closing, this season and this episode have stamped one thing firmly in my mind: we haven't seen anything yet. The fact that I can still be completely surprised and shocked to my core by a show in the midst of it's fifth season is beyond amazing. I have a feeling that we're in for a very, very fun ride.
