LOST
Because You Left
aka:
"A side order of guilt, please!"

Image

In the first part of the Season Five premiere, the people on the island begin to experience the consequences of moving the island. Back in civilization, Jack (along with Ben) begins to carry out their plan to bring everyone back to the island, which proves to be more difficult than they thought.

Every year, I impatiently wait for the Lost season premiere, sure that it can't possibly live up to my expectations. Each year I am proven wrong.

This year, like all the others, I have been proven wrong. Not only did the season premiere far surpass even my wildest hopes, it completely blew any and all competition out of the water in terms of action, story, character development and (most importantly) sheer entertainment value. I would even go so far as to put last night's premiere up as the best one yet (although admittedly, it would face some serious competition).

From the very opening shot of an alarm clock ticking from 8:14 to 8:15 (the numbers), we see a man get up, put on a record, comfort his child, shave, and dress. The record begins to skip (which comes into play later) and he stops the record and heads off to work at the Dharma Initiative Camp. He arrives at an impromptu film set and that's when we realize that it's none other than Dr. Pierre "Marvin Candle" Chang himself, preparing to film the orientation movie for The Arrow station - a station to develop "defensive strategies and gather information on the island's hostile indigenous population (aka "The Others"). The filming is interrupted by a worker, who tells Candle there's a problem at The Orchid station, which we see is currently being built (which places this whole thing sometime during the 1970s). The foreman informs Candle that their drills melted when trying to push though a rock wall and shows him sonar imaging that reveals that the "Donkey Wheel Room" existed there far before the Dharma Initiative came to the island. Candle tells him that behind the wall is "almost limitless energy" and that with it they hope to manipulate time, which the foreman scoffs at. He tells them not to drill any further because "if that were to happen... God help us all". On his way out, he bumps into a worker and in yet another classic "WTF" moment we see that the worker is actually Daniel.

Yeah, that's what I said: Daniel. This season isn't pulling any punches.

Back in civilization (which is sometime around 2007 I believe) at Hoffs/Drawlar Funeral Parlor, Jack (who's still rocking the drugged-up Grateful Dead beard look) stands over Locke's dead body and Ben arrives with a stretcher to load Locke's body into a van. In an introspective moment, Jack asks out loud "How did this happen?" and Ben matter-of-factly replies, "Because you left, Jack." Wow Ben, lay that guilt trip on a little thicker, why dont'cha? At a hotel room later, Jack cleans up and shaves and once again begins to look like the Jack we all know, which is kind of a recurring theme throughout the premiere (characters returning to form). Jack asks Ben when he last saw Locke, and Ben tells him about their final words in the Orchid (before Ben moved the wheel and got sent across time to the desert). Ben in turn asks Jack what Locke told him to make him such a believer, and Jack says that he was told that everyone on the island would die if he didn't come back.

*ahem* No pressure, though. *ahem*
Beefcake
'Beefcaaaaaake!'

Back in the past on the island, Ben moves the wheel and the sky flashes white, which is still friggin' cool no matter how many times I see it. The island is moved, along with everyone on the beach and Daniel and the people on the small boat (who were apparently inside the radius). Locke, who was previously standing with a group of Others, looks around and sees they've all mysteriously vanished. Sawyer (still shirtless, much to the average female viewer's delight I'm assuming) also begins to worry when he notices that he can't see the smoke from the freighter anymore. Bernard comes running out of the jungle yelling for Rose, who joins them a moment later. Sawyer tells them to get back to the camp, and that's when Bernard breaks the news to him - the camp is gone. They race back to find the entire camp missing, and Daniel pops up to shed some light on the situation. He tells Juliet that they need to get to a manmade structure soon, before it happens again. Sawyer asks him "before what happens again?" and Daniel drops the bombshell: "the camp isn't gone... it hasn't been built yet." Thaaat's right, they've all gone back into the past, before the Losties crashed there.

Back in 2007, Kate is making coffee while Aaron watches cartoons (cuuuute!) when there's a knock at the door. Kate opens it and a man introduces himself as Dan Norton, a lawyer from (anagram people at the ready) "Agostini and Norton". He tells Kate that they've been granted a warrant to obtain a blood sample from her and from Aaron, and Kate realizes that someone knows about their secret. She asks who his client is, and he tells her he's "not at liberty to divulge that". She tells them to leave, and Norton threatens her saying he'll be back with the Sheriff. "Then come back with the Sheriff", she tells him and slams the door. Just like Jack's shower-and-shave transformation, Kate snaps into action and we see that despite her time with Aaron, she hasn't changed a bit - she's still the Kate we all know  - "ready to run" as it were. She packs a quick suitcase, complete with cash and a gun she had stashed and ready to go (presumably for an occasion like this), grabs Aaron, tells him to say goodbye, and they flee.

On the island (now even further in the past), Juliet asks Sawyer why he jumped off the helicopter, and Sawyer unwittingly reveals he did it for Kate when he stumbles over his words. Daniel impatiently prods them forward, telling them to pick up the pace in a very condescending tone. Sawyer, being Sawyer, confronts Daniel and demands to know what's going on, but Daniel shrugs him off. He mocks Sawyer and tells him that it would take forever to explain the situation to a quantum physicist, but to explain it to someone like him... and Sawyer slaps him. Full on "keep your pimp hand strong" slaps him. Charlotte tries to come between them, but Sawyer tells her "shut it Ginger, or you're getting one too" (haha!). Daniel explains that the island is like a record that's skipping, and that whatever Ben did somehow dislodged them. He tells them that either they're moving through time, or the island is. He asks Sawyer if they're all accounted for and Sawyer says "not everyone..."

John Locke
'That son of a b**ch WILL fly!'
Locke hikes through the jungle when he sees a small plane flying overhead. He starts to signal the plane and that's when he notices that it has an engine out and it's coming in fast. The plane flies overhead and crashes down into the jungle. Locke looks on the ground and sees that the plane dropped a small Virgin Mary statue, and with that... my mind officially exploded. Once again, Lost ties everything together. Much like how Desmond's flash (when he didn't turn the key) brought Oceanic 815 crashing onto the island, their jump into the past also coincided with the crashing of Yemi's heroin plane (the one that will eventually lead to Boone dying). Locke goes to investigate and finds the plane, right where we remember it. He starts to climb up the roots to it (no! Bad idea! Bad idea!) when shots ring out and he catches a bullet in the leg, dropping to the ground below. The shooter? None other than Ethan (who used to be creepier than his cousin Tom "Mapother" Cruise, but now seems very likeable in comparison). Locke tells him that he knows him, and that Ben appointed him as their leader, but Ethan tells him that doesn't make any sense and raises his rifle. Suddenly, there's another white flash and it's night, and Ethan is gone.

In 2007, Sun checks in for a flight to L.A. aboard Oceanic Airlines (Flight 23 boarding at Gate 15, no less). Seriously? Iif I was in a plane crash, the last thing I would want to do was fly with the same airline again. Regardless, the attendant at the counter scans her ticket and tells her to come with her. She is taken to an interview room and locked in. She bangs on the door, but Charles Widmore arrives and tells her to save her breath - they only do what he tells them to. She asks him why he stopped her, and he growls that she approached him in broad daylight, in public, and showed him no respect. "I will be respected", he tells her. For a moment I thought something very bad was going to happen to Sun, but instead she just agrees and they just sit down for a cozy little chat. Widmore asks her what she meant by "common interests" and she replies "to kill Ben Linus".

Y'know, maybe if you ate more comfort food, you wouldn't have to go around shooting people. -Hurley

Jack, now dressed in a suit, prepares to go get Hurley, but Ben is motionless in front of the TV. Jack turns to see the news that Sayid is apparently not bothering to cover his tracks because that authorities found the dead body (the one that Sayid killed) outside the Santa Rosa looney-bin, and that Hurley has escaped. "Looks like we have a change of plan" Ben remarks. Sayid and Hurley stop in at a Rainbow Drive-In to get Hurley some food, and when Sayid turns down Hurley's offer of a french fry, Hurley tells him "Y'know, maybe if you ate more comfort food, you wouldn't have to go around shooting people." Haha! There's a classic Lindelof/Cuse line if ever I've heard one.

They arrive at Sayid's safehouse and Hurley pries for more information. Sayid tells him about working for Ben and tells Hurley that if he ever has the misfortune of running into him, to just do the complete opposite of what he asks. Sayid suddenly stops when he notices that the tape he placed on the door is broken, meaning the safehouse has been breached. An attacker whips open the door and attacks Sayid. Sayid blocks and then throws him over the railing to his death three floors down. Shots whiz past him, and Sayid turns around to see another attacker with a dart gun. Sayid leaps at him, they momentarily struggle and Sayid is thrown across the room.

Outside, Hurley picks up the gun and looks over the railing at the dead body, which is quickly gathering a crowd of people. They look up and see him with the gun and one person snaps a picture with his cell phone before they all run off. Inside, Sayid goes for a hidden gun while the attacker (who apparently went to the Stormtrooper Institute of Shooting) repeatedly misses him with the darts. Finally, he hits Sayid in the shoulder and Sayid drops. The attacker edges closer and Sayid (who was playing possum) pops back up and they continue to fight, knocking open the dishwasher which just so conveniently happens to have a bunch of knives sticking straight up (really? Who puts that many knives all with their blades up in the dishwasher?). In the struggle, Sayid kicks the attacker's legs out from under him, and the attacker falls straight down on the upturned blades. Sayid starts to feel woozy, and Hurley helps get him to the car.

Hurley and Sayid
Two beers in, Sayid gets a little 'grabby'.
On the island (whenever they are now) they arrive at the Hatch to find it destroyed, placing them sometime after Oceanic 815 crashed. Sawyer wants to return to the camp and warn everyone, but Daniel stops him and tells him that you can't change anything - that's not the way it works. Even if you wanted to, you'd fail every time (destiny and predeterminism). Sawyer wants to know how Daniel knows so much about this and Daniel tells him that he's spent his entire adult life studying this and that his notebook (the one he's always suspiciously consulting) contains everything he's ever discovered about the Dharma Institute. He tells Sawyer that he can't stop it, and Sawyer asks "who can?", which perfectly segues back to Locke, still by the plane (which is on the ground again, already having crashed with poor Boone inside). Yemi's body is still inside, so that places it sometime after the hatch explosion, but before Ecko died.

Locke climbs into the plane and grabs a strap to make a tourniquet with. He hears rustling in the jungle and draws his knife, but it's only Richard Alpert, who has a pack with medical supplies. He tells Locke that he needs to get the bullet out of his leg, and Locke asks him how he knew he had a bullet in his leg and Richard says Locke told him there was, or that he will. Locke tells him about Ethan being the shooter to which Richard replies "well, what goes around comes around" (referring to Ethan's death no doubt). Locke asks him "when am I?" and Richard tells him it's all relative and removes the bullet. Locke has more questions, but Richard stops him and tells him that they only have limited time and that he needs to tell Locke what to do. He tells Locke that the next time they meet, Richard won't recognize him (because it will probably be in the past before they met) and he hands Locke a compass and tells Locke to give it to him when they meet. It's not just any compass, though - it's the compass from the "Dalai Lama test" that Richard gave to a young John Locke. He then tells Locke that the only way to save the island is to get everyone back to the island and that to do that... "you're going to have to die, John". Another flash, and it's daylight and Richard Alpert is gone. John looks up in the trees and the plane is once again up there.

After the flash, Sawyer and the time-displaced Losties look around and see that the hatch is intact, and hasn't been dug up yet. Sawyer decides to go around to the back door and get food and clothing (he's still shirtless), but Daniel tells him it won't work. Sawyer bangs on the door over and over, but no one answers. Daniel yells at him and tells him if it didn't happen, it can't happen - you can't change the past. Then, in one of those rare moments when we get to see beyond Sawyer's gruff exterior, he grabs Daniel by the collar and growls "Everything I care about just blew up on your damn boat... I know what I can't change." The look in his eyes tells you that it's tearing him up inside. I don't know what to say... it was powerful, it was moving. It's the kind of thing Lost does. Sawyer puts his game face back on and storms back to the camp, with Juliet and Miles following behind.

Charlotte hangs back with Daniel, and he notices that her nose has started bleeding - the same signs Minkowski went through before he died. He tells her to go on ahead and he'll catch up and then when she leaves he races back to his pack and consults his notebook. It doesn't show what it says, but you can tell it isn't good. He runs back to the hatch door and bangs on it over and over. This time, Desmond (in a hazmat suit - remember the whole sickness charade?) opens the door and aims a rifle at Daniel. He asks if Daniel is his replacement, and Daniel begs him to listen. He tells Desmond that he's the only person who can help them, that the rules don't apply to him. He tells him about the helicopter and everyone getting off the island. He tells Desmond that when it happens to go to Oxford, find Daniel's mother. He starts to say her name when suddenly there is a white flash...

...and Desmond wakes up, startled. It's 2007 and he's on a boat with Penny. He tells her he was on the island, and she comforts him, telling him that it was just a dream. "It wasn't a dream, Pen... it was a memory." he says, then jumps out of bed. He pulls up anchor and tells Penny that they're going to Oxford.

Which leads us to the second episode of the 2-part premiere:

LOST
The Lie
aka:
"Not just pants on fire..."

Image

In the second part of the Season Five premiere, things continue to worsen for the people still on the island while Ben and Jack continue to try to round up the rest of the Oceanic Six. Meanwhile, Hurley gets advice from a familiar face while pieces of the larger puzzle start to fall into place.

While not written by the uber writing team of Lindelof & Cuse, the second episode of the 2-part season premiere is every bit as entertaining and thought-provoking as the first, and the two compliment each other perfectly. Where "Because You Left" is chock full of the charming quirks that make Lost what it is, "The Lie" is more of a mythos-centric episode and the more thought provoking of the two, in my opinion. They even hid a massive spoiler as to the fate of one of the main characters among the many twists and turns. Did you catch it?

Image
'So it's settled. I'm Gilligan, he's the Skipper.'
The episode begins aboard The Searcher in the days after the island vanished. Jack speaks with the rest of the survivors and they vote whether or not to lie to hide the truth behind the island and the rest of the Losties. Jack even asks Frank if he's comfortable lying and he replies in his Jeff-Lebowski-ish way that whatever they decide, he'll "just roll with". While Sayid deliberates, Hurley pipes up and tells them that he doesn't want to lie. He wants to know why they can't just tell everyone the truth: "The island disappeared, we all saw it... BLOOP!" (appropriate because it's the TiVo sound - get it?). Jack replies that no one would believe them if they told the truth, but Hurley won't be dissuaded that easily. He says they'll believe them if they stick together and back each other up, and looks towards the still undecided Sayid. Unfortunately, Sayid decides that it's best to go with the lie and Hurley tells him "I'm going to remember this. Someday, you're going to need my help and you're not getting it."

Back in 2007, Hurley drives down the road, screaming at the now unconscious Sayid to wake up. No offense, but judging by the accident with his Camaro and his van-related homicide of Mr. Friendly, Hurley is the LAST person I'd want driving the getaway car. Sure enough, he swerves while trying to wake Sayid up and police lights flash in his rear view mirror. Hurley freaks out, but eventually pulls over. A female cop gets out of the car and approaches the window, and that's when we see that it's Ana Lucia (looking pretty fine for a dead chick no less). It's apparent that the afterlife hasn't affected her personality as she grills Hurley on the spot: "Why did you pull over? What if I were real? Bro, you need to pull it together. You got a lot of work to do." Ana Lucia lays out a step-by-step of what Hurley needs to do, including getting a new shirt and finding somewhere safe. Hurley thanks her and she leaves with a parting shot, "Libby says hi."
Daniel Faraday
'Ok, stop laughing at my sextant.'

Back at the island (in whatever time they are - looks like they don't have the camp anymore so it's pre-crash) Bernard tries to build a fire, while fan favorite Neil (aka "Frogurt") complains. Sawyer takes Neil's extra shirt (sorry ladies). Upon noticing Daniel returning to the camp, Sawyer remarks "Look who's back... Dr. Wizard", and Miles is quick to correct him: "Isn't it Mr. Wizard?" Sawyer must be really preoccupied if he's even messing up his nickname schtick. Juliet suggests taking The Zodiac and leaving the island, but without knowing when they are in time, Daniel can't map the correct trajectory out. Luckily, he just so happens to be carrying a sextant in his pack for some quick astrometry. Just another in the long line of sneaking suspicions I have about Daniel Faraday. Miles lets them do their thing, and heads off into the jungle to find them something to eat (presumably using his unexplained ghost-talking abilities).

2007 - Hurley borrows money from Sayid's wallet and buys himself an "I Heart Shih-Tzu's" T-shirt at a local gas station. The girl at the counter swears he looks familiar and finally realizes it's because he's the guy who won the lotto and then crashed on that island. Hurley denies it, pays her, then takes off. Coincidentally, Kate and Aaron pull into the exact same station right as Hurley leaves it. Kate looks at the map and isn't sure where to go. She flips open her cell and pulls up Jack's number, but can't bring herself to actually call him. She finally gives up and closes the phone when it rings and the caller ID says "Unknown". Kate is suprised to hear from the person, and agrees to meet them in L.A.

At Ben's hotel room, he unscrews a vent cover on the wall and removes a wrapped up box of some kind (to quote Se7en - "what's in the box... WHAT'S IN THE BOX!?!?"). Jack emerges from the bathroom in a suit and starts to go through his old grubby clothes. Ben asks him if he's looking for his pills, and then informs him that they were flushed down the toilet. Jack thanks him and says he was about to do the same thing, but from the look in Jack's eye I'm not so sure. Ben tells him to go home, find a suitcase, pack anything he wants to keep because he's never coming back. "Good", Jack replies. Ben tells him that he'll pick him up in six hours, but that he has to move Locke's body somewhere safe. Jack seems confused and jokes "he's dead, isn't he?"

Image
Four beers in, it gets a bit rowdy.
Hurley takes Sayid to the one place he knows he's safe: his parent's house. His father is sitting watching a rerun of Exposé when he hears a tapping at the back door and opens it to find Hurley carrying Sayid over his shoulders. Hurley tells him that he's in danger, but the intercom beeps, interrupting him. It's the LAPD, and Hurley begs his father to tell them he isn't there. Hurley's dad agrees on one condition: Hurley is going to tell him the truth. Hurley's dad gets rid of the cops, but then notices that Sayid is barely breathing and tells Hurley that Sayid needs a doctor.  Hurley thinks for a moment, then says "I know what to do". Meanwhile, Kate arrives at a hotel and takes the elevator to the 31st floor, where she meets the person who called: Sun.

Ben meanwhile makes his way to a local butcher shop. He takes a number (conveniently covering up the 3 on "342" to make "42") and the woman behind the counter says hello and calls him by name. "There's something important in my van, Jill" he tells her, and she asks if it's what she thinks it is. He nods and she says "he'll be safe with me". Ben asks if "Gabriel and Jeffrey" have checked in yet and she tells him everything is moving right on schedule, and asks about Jack. Ben tells her that he's with them, and she scoffs "What did you do, bribe him with some pills?" and Ben tells her to cut him some slack, he's been through a lot. He tells Jill to keep Locke's body safe, because "if you don't, everything we're about to do won't matter at all".

Heartburn. Get it?
On the island, Bernard is still trying to make fire, and Frogurt is getting agitated. Charlotte can't seem to shake a bad headache, and tells Daniel that earlier she couldn't remember her mother's maiden name. Upon seeing the concerned look on Daniel's face, she asks him if he knows what's happening to her. Before he can answer, Miles returns with a dead boar over his shoulder and tells them he found it in the jungle and that it's only been dead 3 hours. Bernard's fire catches a spark, but goes out when Bernard tries to fan the flames. Frogurt snaps and yells at Bernard, and when Sawyer steps in, he calls Sawyer an inbred and flips out. "How are any of us going to get through this? We can't even get fire!" he screams and right at that moment a flaming arrow flies through the air and imbeds itself in his chest with a thud. Frogurt screams as more flaming arrows rain down on them and everyone rushes to the treeline for safety. Juliet stops to put out one of the people on fire, but Saywer runs in and pulls her out, telling her there's nothing she can do.

In 2007, Hurley sees that the cops have begun a stakeout of his father's house, and his dad tells him they think he's crazy enough to come home. Then, he stops and asks the big question: "Are you? Are you crazy?" and Hurley tells him that he's not crazy, and that he has a really good reason for lying to him. Before he can say anything else though, his mother returns home and wants to know why there's "a dead Pakistani" on her couch. She tells Hurley he's not breathing and he races down the stairs to check. Sayid's still breathing, but barely. He helps his dad load Sayid into an SUV and promises his mother that it will all make sense.

Kate and Sun catch up at her hotel room and she tells Sun about the lawyers and that they wouldn't reveal their client. Sun tells her it's good because if the person wanted the secret out, they would just let it out. Sun tells her to "take care of them", and Kate is disgusted by the idea. And then, out of nowhere, Sun goes all cold-hearted psycho. She tells Kate that she doesn't blame her for what happened to Jin, but you can tell she most definitely does - in a big way. Then, to add insult to injury, when she's done laying a big fat guilt trip all over Kate, she finishes up by asking "how's Jack?" Wow... cold.

Hurley's dad delivers Sayid to Jack, but tells him that when this is all over, to stay away from Hurley. Jack calls Ben to let him know he has Sayid. Meanwhile, Hurley tries to keep up the lie, but finally breaks down and tells his mother everything. He tells her about the island, and the smoke monster, and the hatches, and the Dharma Institute, and the rest of the people on the island. For a moment, his mother just sits and stares at him like he's insane (I think we've all been there before - just try explaining Lost to someone who's never seen it sometime). She tells him she believes him. She doesn't understand him, but she believes him.

On the island in the past, Sawyer injures his foot while walking through the jungle (serves you right for going barefoot, huh?) and he hears people up ahead. He and Juliet duck behind some bushes and watch as armed men walk by. Sawyer asks Juliet if they're with the Others, and she replies "You want me to crawl out there and ask them?" Sawyer starts to tell her she doesn't have to be a wiseass when someone grabs her by the hair and yanks her to her feet. Another man grabs Sawyer and puts a machete to his throat. A third man storms out of the brush wearing an old Army uniform with the name "Jones" on it and demands to know what they're doing on their island.

Image
Six beers later, things have officially gone too far.
Back in 2007, Jack injects Sayid with something and tries to resuscitate him. Sayid snaps awake and starts to choke Jack, who tries to calm him. Sayid realizes where he is and who he's choking and stops. Jack tells him they were attacked, but Sayid is more concerned with Hurley. Jack tells him he's okay, and Sayid wants to know who's with him.

Hurley (cooking a hot pocket) turns around and is startled to find Ben standing there in the kitchen. Ben tells him that he's taken care of everything and that he knows Jack and Sayid are together. Hurley doesn't trust him, and Ben can understand why. He tells Hurley that they all want the same thing - to get back to the island. He says that if Hurley comes with him, he'll never have to lie again. Hurley considers it a moment, and then (remembering Sayid's advice) tells him "never, dude" and runs for it. He bolts outside and begs the police to arrest him and take him away. Ben looks on in frustration as they put cuffs on Hurley and take him away.

On the island, Jones (the Army guy) demands that Sawyer tell him what they're doing there, or Juliet will lose her other hand as well. "Other?" Sawyer asks, and Jones tells them that the first one is non-negotiable to illustrate how serious they are. Sawyer struggles, and the other guy raises the machete to the sky... and BAM! He gets knocked out with a rock. The third guy turns around and gets a rock to the face as well. Sawyer grapples with a fourth, while Juliet grabs the rifle and levels it at Jones. By this time, the first guy is back up and raises the machete once again, but a knife comes whistling through the trees and sticks right in his chest, dropping him to the ground. Juliet looks out into the treeline, and Locke (no surprise there - he does enjoy killing people with knives after all) comes walking out - "James... Juliet... nice to see you."

Back in 2007, we see an old woman in a shawl writing mathematical equations on a chalkboard and consulting and oldschool Apple computer. Behind her, a kind of Foucault pendulum swings back and forth, marking lines on the floor. The screen flashes "event window determined" and she walks upstairs where we see she's in a large church or cathedral, and Ben is waiting for her. "Any luck?" he asks. She says yes, but that he only has 70 hours to get them all back, turning to reveal herself as Ms. Hawking. Ben tells her it can't be done and that he lost Hurley. "So what happens if I can't get them all to come back?" he asks. "Then God help us all" she says.

Peter, I really like your theory about the spider venom, but I have one problem with it. Jack went to Locke's viewing. Viewings are held after the body is embalmed. Can a person leave it in their last will and testament that they don't want to be embalmed? Otherwise I think it is a solid theory.

The writers of Heroes need to take a cue from Lost. I was worried when they introduced the crashed plane and Locke climbing up to it because of the paradox it presents regarding Boone. I was relieved to see the rules were explicitly spelled out but then again concerned when I realized that in the episode "The Constant", Desmond essentially did change the past by going to meet Daniel Faraday when he was teaching at Oxford.

My fears were again satiated immediately by the explanation that Desmond is special. I'm so thrilled Lost is back in full form and I look forward to your reviews. Cheers to a new season!

P.S. The theory that the Oceanic Six are everyone else's constants is also quite good. Also, I don't think that was Yemi's body in the plane, there was another passenger in the plane with Yemi. At that time in the island's history, the oceanic six had already left as Alpert told Locke they made it off the freighter and Locke needs to bring them back.

@manzy704 - I actually thought about that. If Locke wanted to fake his death, it would have to be believable, so he couldn't just show up somewhere dead. He'd have to arrange for a viewing, he'd have to arrange for people to watch over his body (Ben, Jill, Gregory, etc), pay off the funeral home, plant a fake obituary, etc. I have a feeling that no one went to his funeral because no one but the Oceanic Six was told about it. We've seen how Ben was able to pull off amazing things, now that Locke is the Other's leader, I'm sure he'll have access to those connections.

You could be right about the Yemi thing. I just remembered that Ecko didn't find his brother's body when he went there the final time.
