Lost Episode 4.5LOST
The Constant
aka: "Back to the Butterfly Effect Future"
by Peter Sorensen

In the fifth episode of Season Four, the complete and total mindf**k continues. Desmond and Sayid hit some turbulence on the way to the boat, resulting in Desmond experiencing some rather odd "side effects", namely having his consciousness travel back and forth between the past and the present.

Alright, you can pick your jaws up off the floor, put your eyeballs back in their sockets, reassemble your exploded brain parts, and start breathing again - the episode is over. I am currently typing this standing up because I found that, due to the obscene amounts of adrenaline coursing through my veins and thoughts rushing through my head, I am unable to sit still.

Best... Episode... Yet.

I'm finding it increasingly more difficult as these weeks roll by to accurately describe my complete joy and elation regarding this season. Is it possible to be "scrumtrilescently farblongjid"? If it is, I am definitely that.

Tonights episode, beyond being a truly brilliant example of entertaining science fiction, had everything a person could ask for in primetime television: action, adventure, mystery, phenomenal abilities, fights, rebellion, time changes, location changes, and a globe-trotting time-spanning romance. I literally stood up out of my chair and applauded at the end of tonight's episode in the vain hope that somewhere, out there in the darkened hills of Hollywood, Damon and Carlton could - through the same quirks of time and space that they write so well - somehow hear it.
The Heading
'306: When only 305 will do'

The episode opens with Desmond and Sayid aboard the helicopter with Frank, heading towards the boat as planned. Frank checks his notes from Daniel, and sure enough, the heading is 305 degrees north - the same heading Ben gave Michael to leave the island as well as the indicator on Eko's staff ("LIFT UP YOUR EYES AND LOOK NORTH" -John 3:05).  The numbers literally explode out of this episode at every possible turn, so much so that you could spend weeks dissecting it in all it's mathematic beauty.

Passing through a storm, they encounter some turbulence that knocks them slightly off-course and suddenly Desmond finds himself back in 1996 during his time in the Army. As quick as he appears, he vanishes back to the present, only this time his mind doesn't follow him. Desmond, his mind still stuck in 1996, doesn't recognize Sayid or Frank or even where he is. He freaks out and Frank manages to land them on the boat.

On the island, the other Losties haven't heard from Sayid in over a day and are very worried - except for Charlotte and Daniel, that is. Juliet and Jack push them for information until Daniel lets it spill that they actually do know something - the Losties perception of time is off and if Frank deviated from his course, there could be "side effects".

Desmond's Drill Instructor
'Today...is Christmas! There will be a magic show at zero-nine-thirty!'
On the boat, we meet the rest of the crew (except Regina... hmmm. Traitor much?) and they all basically seem like thugs. They convince Sayid to let them take Desmond to sick bay but before they can, Desmond's mind flips back to the past. Still training in the army, he tells a friend of his about the weird things he's experiencing and then remembers that he saw Penny in a photo, so he goes to call her. He reaches down to pick up some dropped change, and bam - back in the present again, a mere moment from when he left. They lock him in the sick bay, but he's not alone. We meet Minkowski finally (played by the every creepy Fisher Stevens), but he's been strapped to a hospital bed.  "It's happening to you too, isn't it?" he asks.

Sayid calls the Losties, who are excited to hear from him, and tells them about Desmond. Daniel immediately recognizes the effects and asks if Desmond has been recently exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism, for example: that EM bath that Des took thanks to Locke and his button-is-bad-obsession.

Back on the boat, the doctor arrives and sedates Minkowski and begins to examine Desmond when suddenly Des shoots back to the past again, still leaning over to get that change he dropped. He picks it up and calls Penny, who greets him with a less-than-warm reception (geez, you walk out on a girl ONCE and she holds it against you forever).  Desmond is pulled back to the present suddenly and Sayid bursts in the door and gives Desmond the satellite phone with Daniel on the other line. Daniel asks him what year he thinks it is, and then tells Desmond that when he goes back to 1996 to find Daniel in the past at Oxford University - to tell his past self to set "the machine" to 2.342 (23, 42 - the numbers again) and 11Hz oscillation. If that doesn't convince him, Daniel tells Des to say that he "knows about Eloise". Sayid does his best to hold off the Boaties, but they eventually get in an lock Sayid and Desmond in the sick bay.

Sure enough, Desmond is yanked back to the past and he heads to Oxford, where he finds a younger Daniel teaching there. He's still pretty scattered (and more than a little yuppified) but much more in control of his mind. At first he thinks Desmond is playing a trick on him... until, that is, Desmond mentions Eloise.

What do you put on your head?
-Desmond

Daniel takes Desmond to his lab, and introduces Eloise: his pet rat. He puts on a radiation shield, but tells Desmond he only needs it because he does this so many times a day. "What do you wear on your head?" Desmond asks, giving us all a little more insight into why Daniel in the present is the zany way he is.

Daniel puts Eloise into a maze, sets the machine to Desmond's settings, and blasts the rat with an intense beam of pink radiation (much like the pink laser that gives the futuristic main character in  Philip K. Dick's VALIS - the book in last weeks episode - "living knowledge" that he is in fact a citizen of ancient Rome). Eloise wakes from her trance and immediately navigates the maze perfectly, much to Daniel's excitement. The maze, he reveals, wasn't built until that morning, and he wasn't going to train Eloise how to run it until later that afternoon: Eloise's consciousness had been to the future and had returned with the knowledge.

Daniel's Experiment
Later, the irradiated Eloise bites a lab assistant and begins the career of LabRatMan.
Desmond starts to tell Daniel about the island they're stuck on when he's yanked back into the present again. Minkowski reveals that he's the communication officer for the ship and that for the last two weeks they've been receiving a series of incoming calls, but were under strict orders not to answer it - calls from Penelope Widmore. After only 5 minutes, Desmond is jerked violently back to Daniels lab in the past again where Daniel tells him he was comatose for 75 minutes his time, currently making it a 75:5 ratio (remember that number for later). Daniel crunches more numbers and tells him that the leaps will get exponentially worse and possibly fatal unless Desmond can find a "constant" to both equations - something that exists both in the past and in the present. Desmond, being the romantic he is, chooses Penny.

Desmond is again pulled back to the present and  tells Sayid that he needs to contact Penny, but Minkowski tells him that two days ago someone sabotaged all the radio equipment. This isn't a problem of course for Sayid, considering that all he ever seems to do on the show is hurt people or fix radios.  Sayid asks how they're going to escape, but Minkowski points out that the door is open. Sure enough, it is. "You have a friend on this boat", he remarks flippantly.

Des shoots back to the past and seeks out the only person he knows that can get him in contact with Penny: her father. He finds Mr. Widmore at an auction. On the block - the journal of the first mate of the Black Rock from the collection of Tolvar Hanso  himself. The lot number? 2342. (same as the laser frequency) Mr. Widmore's buyer number? 755 (75:5 ratio from before). Desmond talks to Mr. Widmore, asks to get in touch with Penny. Mr. Widmore gives Des her address (no doubt expecting her to blow him off), but before Desmond can leave the bathroom, he's back on the boat in the present again.

Minkowski tells Desmond that he starting experiencing the time leaps after him and a shipmate took a boat out to try and see the island. The shipmate didn't survive. They make it to the communications room and Sayid starts to cobble together a radio when Minkowski goes comatose. Desmond sees a calendar and realizes that it's Christmas Eve of 2004. Minkowski comes too, but starts shaking and bleeding. "I can't get back", he says. Seconds later, the shaking stops and Minkowski is no more.
Fisher Stevens: One Role for Life
'How many times do I have to tell you, call me The Plague.'

(British accent): "He has ceased to be! He has expired and gone to meet his maker! He's a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace!" (end of British accent)

Desmond jumps back to the past and goes to see Penny at her flat (423 Cheyne Walk - 4, 23). Penny is reluctant, but Desmond pleads with her to listen to him. He tells her that he needs her number and that eight years from then, he'll call. December 24th, 2004 - he'll call, and if there's any part of her that still cares for him, any part that still loves him, he hopes she'll be there to answer it. Angry and confused, she gives him her number and kicks him out. Desmond leaps back to the present and gives the number to Sayid, who dials it up and hands Desmond the receiver. It rings... and rings... and rings. The pacing for this entire scene is brilliant. The anticipation builds and builds until you can't stand it anymore. Finally, Penny picks up.

Cue the leaping and jumping and cheering from Yours Truly. What can I say? I'm a hopeless romantic at heart.

Desmond tells her about the island, she tells him she knows about it, she's been researching it. She tells him she knew she was right when she talked to Charlie (which knowing about the time difference could have been months ago in her time). Desmond tells her he loves her, she tells him she loves him, he vows he'll come back to her, she vows she'll keep looking for him. It's the kind of moment you wait seasons for, the kind of moment that epitomizes great television.

The power source for the radio slowly dies, but it was enough. Having contacted Penny in the past and in the present, Desmond has found his "constant". He thanks Sayid, and when Sayid asks if he's ok, Desmond replies: "Aye. I'm perfect."

Back on the island, Dan goes through his journal and stops on a page. Written there is a single sentence - "If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant". Daniel smiles, and closes the book.

My thoughts (and a detailed look at Daniel's notes)?

Next week - Episode 4.6 (Not Yet Titled):

Lost had 8 episodes filmed before the WGA Strike, but they are taking a season break after Episode 7, as Episode 8 was the start of the second story arc. This means that we only have 2 more weeks of Lost, then the show will break, film the remaining episodes, and return in a few months with anywhere from 5-8 more episodes, wrapping up the Season. I don't have to tell you that I'm extremely dissapointed because with as great as this seasons been so far, I am a Lost addict again.

Also - it's that time. I put everyone's name in a hat and picked one out and the winner has been decided in our Lost Season 3 DVD Contest. It's still very hush-hush, but check back Saturday evening for the official Winners Announcement!

About the Author:
Peter Sorensen is a four-toed insurgent from a remote island who spends his days writing and his nights drinking cheap rum and participating in paragovernmental activities. After being deported to the United States over a border dispute, he took up film and animation as a way to pay for his tragic caffeine addiction. When he is not sowing discord on the streets or committing heineous acts of sedition he sometimes finds a moment to sketch.

What does it all mean? What are in Daniels notes? Post a comment below and let us know!

Also - did you notice in Daniels notes (the ones at the end of the episode) he has an illustration of time lines entering spheres labeled Event A, Event B, Event C, and so on? It could mean that there are several different events that could skew the current timeline into another timeline - for instance, Charlie dying allowing them to be rescued?

I'm so glad I was required to take a course in modern physics as part of my CSE degree! Lost has made it all worth it! :)

But seriously, I'm really f-ing thrilled the way things are coming together in this show. I know people who like it, like my wife. We'll be watching and see the scene with the Black Rock journal being auctioned and I'll say "Holy Shit!" and she'll say "What's the Black Rock?" She has seen every episode and even played the Find815 ARG and doesn't know what the Black Rock is!?!?!!

I'm glad I have the community on this site!

My question is, why would Torvard Hanso auction a journal that contains a secret such as the island? Is it because he had a falling out with Alvar Hanso or considered the island lost to Ben and the Hostiles? Seriously, Magnus Hanso was likely the captain of the Black Rock or first Western explorer of the island and he wanted to keep the secret of it with him family.

Here is the picture I am envisioning, the Black Rock approaches the island and due to the "magnetic pressure" associated with the island (remember there was no button to release the pressure every 108 minutes) it somehow gets teleported to the Dark Territory. Magnus Hanso, the captain of the Black Rock and some of his crew and slaves survive this ordeal and venture out exploring the island. They meet natives who are four toed, peaceful and quite aware of the outside world but wants to keep them away. They also seem to be able to grow really old without aging. Hanso betrays these people and steals their island and secrets. The hostiles kill him and bury him near the Black Rock and his first mate escapes the island somehow along with his journal. Maybe someone else finds the island and he goes with them or maybe he gets teleported through time off the island to the 1600s and becomes a dreaded pirate of the Indian Seas. Ultimately dying on an island near Madagascar. Somehow the journal gets back to the Hanso family in the recent past and they rediscover the island and suppress the hostiles as punishment for their rebellion against their ancestor. Then Dharma is founded...

I'm probably only 5% right.

When the journal

I'm just wondering, if time is out of sync, shouldn't the phone and radio calls be out of sync as well? If the island perceived time more slowly, wouldn't Penny's voice sound like the chipmunks?

Tron: I wholeheartedly agree (brotha)! My brain had the spins last night, big time.

Selah: Crazy is an understatement. :)

Manzy704: I know! It's the exact same way with me. I'll be watching it and something will happen that I freak out about (for instance, last night it was me jumping up and down yelling "It's special relativity! It's special relativity!" while everyone one else stares at me like I'm insane.

You have to remember that the auction occurred in 1996, which could be a sneaky way of revealing that Widmore Industries would go on to become part of the Dharma Initiative, or perhaps that's how Penny learns of the existence of the island herself - from the journal. And thank you for the episode title (at the time of my review Lostpedia didn't have it up).

Teddy: Not necessarily. You see, light waves and radio waves are vastly different wavelengths, hence why you can see light with the naked eye, but not radio waves. The time dilation may effect the speed of light on the island but radio waves may be able to travel undistorted through it.

I've been pondering the idea of a constant. While the fascinating elements of this show may be more about scientific physical laws and bends, it occurs to me that it is also looking at psychological "science", too. Don't we all need a constant or constants in our lives, whether that is a belief or a being or both, something or someone that anchors us? Yes, that can be very romantic, but it can also just be very grounding, something basic in our hard wiring. What do you think?

Y'know, I picked it up - just haven't had time to play it yet. I don't have high expectations though, since I've heard they push the "suspension of disbelief" a little far, and half the actors opted out of the voicework.

After I get some face-time (or maybe that should be keyboard-time) with the game, we'll see how it goes.
