Lost 4.7 Ji Yeon ReviewLOST
Ji Yeon
aka: "Must...have...panda bear!"
by Peter Sorensen

In the seventh episode of Season Four, the complete and total mindf**k continues. Juliet lets a secret slip, and it could mean tragedy for Sun and Jin. Meanwhile, Desmond and Sayid meet the rest of the Boaties, including someone with a very familiar face (c'mon, you should know this by now).

I curse whoever it was over at Lost that first pitched the idea of flashforwards.

Sure, it blew me away last season and left all of us collectively scratching our heads, but now it just feels like we're being tossed around in some kind of schoolyard "keep-away" match. Is it a flashback, or is it a flashforward? Is it the past, is it the future? I suppose I would have been genuinely surprised by tonight's episode, had I not seen it coming a mile away, or had they not prematurely given away the twist.

Sun and Jin
Jin admires the 'effects' of Sun's pregnancy

This is what happens when a show gets unnaturally split in half. This season, originally planned to run back to back for sixteen straight weeks, no doubt had an ebb and flow to the complete story arc. Now, thanks to the WGA (congrats on the extra lucre, guys!), production was halted and the show had to be split into two seperate arcs.

Tonight's episode, the resolution to the second act, was no doubt the singular "calm before the storm" episode before the third act kicks into high gear. As a result, we're now left with six more weeks without Lost and on a decidedly morose note.

EDIT:Apparently, this is not the last episode of this story arc, as "Meet Kevin Johnson" will in fact be airing next week instead of in six weeks. So... yeah. Just disregard most of the above.

Quick Recap:

On the boat, Sayid lets it slip that someone let them out of the sick bay, and Frank reveals that not only is the satphone not working now, they've "had a problem in the kitchen", and he warns them against talking to the Captain. Sun and Jin talk baby names, and Jin would like to name their daughter (he's sure it's a girl) Ji Yeon - "heavenly patience" for the uni-lingual out there. In a flashforward, Sun goes into labor. We also see Jin searching frantically for a stuffed panda.

I will hunt you down and rip your head off!

On the island, Kate tells Sun about her run-in with Charlotte and hints that Juliet can't be trusted, so Sun decides to go to Locke's camp. Sayid just now remembers that Ben mentioned a spy on the boat and someone leaves them a note saying not to trust the Captain.  Juliet catches Sun trying to steal prenatal pills for the trip and tries to talk her out of going, but Sun doesn't trust her. In a flashforward we learn that the baby is in distress and they give Sun medication to calm her down. She calls out for Jin. We then see Jin, who accidentally loses his cab, the panda bear, and his cell phone all in one fell swoop. Jin is not happy. He goes back to the toy shop but the bear is sold out except for one on hold. The owner tries to convince him to buy a dragon instead - inadvertantly revealing that the scenes with Jin are actually flashbacks by saying that it's the year of the dragon, which was in 2000. Jin, gives the owner all the money he has and buys the panda bear.

Kate is obviously pissed at Jack for something because she keeps harping on Juliet and makes a map to Locke's camp for Jin and Sun. Juliet shows up and tries to stop them, and in a moment of desperation reveals to Jin that Sun had an affair. Why? Who cares! All that matters is that afterwards Sun slaps the sh** out of her, and that, my friends, is awesome. Jin is not happy. Sun tries to explain, but he turns his back on her. On a fishing trip with Bernard shortly after, Bernard talks about how staying with Jack was the right thing to do and they talk about karma, which apparently opens Jin's eyes.

On the boat, Sayid and Desmond meet the Captain of the boat, but only after learning that Frank has taken the helicopter off on some shady mission, and after watching Regina cover herself head-to-toe in chains and commit suicide by jumping overboard. Fun stuff. Captain Gault (run anagram fiends, run!) stops his crew from helping her, saying that some of the crew has intense "cabin fever". He also reveals that the boat was sent by Charles Widmore. He shows them the black box recovered from the other Flight 815 (the one that was recovered on the ocean floor) and tells them that they want Ben because he might have answers to how and why someone would stage something like that.

On the island, Juliet talks Sun into staying. In a flashforward, Sun gives birth. On the boat, Sayid and Desmond are given quarters, but the massive blood spot on the wall reveals what happened to the previous occupant. One of the deck hands is called over to clean it up, and it's revealed to be Michael (which we all knew by now), who is now going by the name "Kevin Johnson".

'Baby - The Other, Other White Meat'

Jin and Sun make up, and Jin forgives her because he knows the man he used to be. He tells her that he'll do whatever it takes to protect her and the baby - wow! Foreshadow much? He asks her if the baby is his, and she swears that it is. Lucky for her, Jin decides not to take their argument to the Montel Williams Show (or as I like to call it - the "Who My Baby-Daddy Is Show") and chooses to believe her. He tells her that she'll never lose him. Somewhere, a sound editor is cursing himself for forgetting to add the dramatic "Duh-duh-dwaaaaaa!" and "ominous clap of thunder" sound effects.

In the flashback, Jin arrives at the hospital with the panda, which turns out to be a gift for the newly arrived grandson of a visiting Ambassador that Jin's company wants him to schmooze. In the flashforward (which had it's surprise ruined halfway through the show) Hurley and Sun take the baby to visit Jin's grave.

While the episode may not have been quite as action-packed as the last six of the season, we did a crucial bit of information:

Next Week - Episode 4.8, entitled "Meet Kevin Johnson":

Ok, I have officially given up trying to determine this show's schedule. In the words of Eddie Izzard: "It makes... no sense".

Originally, they were supposed to air all 16 episodes back-to-back. Then, when the strike happened, they committed to airing the eight episodes they already had filmed - more if the strike ended early, which it didn't. Then, they announced that they would only be airing the first 7 episodes, with episode 8 starting off the next arc in April, so that the Michael reveal would be the big "cliff hanger" moment between the two.

Now, apparently, they are back to airing episode 8 next week, THEN taking a five week break... I think. Both TV Guide and TV.com have updated their listings to that, so for now I'm going to say that it's definite. Until, that is, we find out next week that they'll be airing another episode the week after or something crazy like that.

Regardless, I'm stoked for next week - mostly because the episode was co-written by Brian K. Vaughan, so it looks to be worth the long and potentially psychologically painful wait.

But don't worry - until then, we have the following promos and trailers for the upcoming episode:

About the Author:
Peter Sorensen is a four-toed insurgent from a remote island who spends his days writing and his nights drinking cheap rum and participating in paragovernmental activities. After being deported to the United States over a border dispute, he took up film and animation as a way to pay for his tragic caffeine addiction. When he is not sowing discord on the streets or committing heineous acts of sedition he sometimes finds a moment to sketch.
