LOSTEggtown aka: "Kate Austin: Ho (fo' sho)" by Peter Sorensen In the fourth episode of Season Four, the complete and total mindf**k continues. Locke starts to lose it (if he ever had it in the first place), Kate uses her feminine wiles to arrange a meeting between Miles and Ben (and a meeting between her and Sawyer's sheets), and in the flashforward, Kate stands trial for her crimes. If you're anything like me, you get a rush of adrenaline when there's a Kate-centric episode of Lost. Of course, if you're anything like me, you have a small closet in your house that you've turned into a Kate Austin love-shrine, complete with candles, an entire wall of Evangeline Lilly photos you took while hiding in her shrubs, the glass she drank out of at the last promotional tour, and a lock of her hair that you snuck onto set to steal and then smuggled out of Hawaii underneath your baseball cap.But I digress... This week, we learn why Kate stayed behind (and no, it's not just to get a little more hot cage lovin' from Sawyer) and get a glimpse into her future (or is it her present? Man, I hate the timelines on this show) as she goes on trial for her past crimes. The episode opens with a reoccuring Lost theme: a close-up of an eye. Locke, owner of said eye, wakes up, wanders to the kitchen, makes breakfast, and grabs a book off the shelf ("Valis" by Philip K. Dick, a great novel about religion and artificial intelligence), and heads down to the basement. This all seems peachy keen... until you realize that the breakfast is for Ben, whom Locke has contained in a makeshift cell. Locke tries to get some answers from Ben about the people on the Boat, but Ben sees right through him and realizes that Locke is directionless. Ben, being the smarmy self-congratulatory a-hole we know and loathe, uses that against Locke. "So here we are, just like old times..", he says, "except I'm locked in a different room (referring to his brief stint as a prisoner in the Swan station), and you're more lost than you ever were." ![]() That tray tried to tell Locke what he can't do. Locke takes the food away from Ben, locks him back up, and then throws a classic Locke hissy fit outside, throwing the tray against the wall and storming out of the house like a teenager grounded for bad grades. Outside, Kate and Claire are sitting on a porch having coffee when Sawyer appears. Claire goes inside, Sawyer offers to let Kate stay with him, mentions the whole pregnancy thing, and the conversation between Kate and Sawyer ends like every conversation between Kate and Sawyer: Kate gets upset, Sawyer gets stubborn, and one of them leaves (this time being Sawyer). Back at the beach, Sun and Jin discuss where they are going to live after getting off the island, and Jack returns with Daniel and Charlotte in tow. When Sun asks about Kate, Jack reluctantly admits that she stayed behind with Locke. Flashforward: Kate and her lawyer sit in a car, preparing to enter the courthouse for her trial. Kate asks if there is a back entrance, but her lawyer tells her that she's going to walk through the front door with her head held high. Once they are in the courtroom, Kate pleads "Not Guilty" to the charges (much to the surprise of everyone there) and the prosecuting attorney has her placed under arrest during the course of the trial, as Kate has been known to run. You just totally Scooby Doo'd me, didn't you? Back on the island, Kate goes to Locke to ask to speak to Miles, but Locke won't allow it and tells her that he's not running a democracy: what he says goes. So instead, Kate tricks Hurley into telling her where Miles is being kept. She sees him taking a tray of food, and she tells him that Locke told her to take it to Miles. "He's still in the rec room, right?" she asks. Hurley says that Locke had him move Miles to the boathouse instead, and then immediately realizes his mistake. "You just totally Scooby Doo'd me, didn't you?" he says, then pleads with her not to tell Locke that he slipped up. Kate goes to the Boathouse to ask Miles a simple question: do the Boaties know who she is and what she's done. Miles plays dumb at first, but then promises to tell her what they know if she'll get him a meeting with one person: Ben. ![]() 'What do you mean 'Prison Break' is on another channel? Back at the beach, Jack continues trying to contact the Boat, but gets nothing. Juliet asks Jack if he should try another number on the satellite phone, and Sun wonders out loud if maybe Locke was right about them. Jack seems more than a little angry at the remark, but keeps it cool and just states that Locke is wrong. "Then why is Kate with him?" she replies. Damn, Jack - you can't really argue with logic like that. At the barracks, Kate and Claire are hanging laundry when Aaron starts to cry. Claire asks Kate to pick him up, but Kate says she's no good with kids and lets Claire get him. Claire says that she never thought she'd be a good mother, and that Kate should try it sometime... oh the delicious irony (if you've seen the episode, you know what I'm talking about). Flashforward: At the trial, Kate's lawyer has no choice but to call a surprise witness: Dr. Jack Shephard. Jack takes the stand as a character witness, and begins to reveal the lie they've created about the island: Jack states that only 8 people survived the initial crash and that Kate saved him, administered first aid to them all, found them food, etc. In the middle of this, Kate stops him. The prosecutor asks Jack one single question: does he love Kate. Jack answers, "No. Not anymore." Both look hurt by the answer. ![]() 'Would you like some Château Cardboard 2003?' At the barracks, Kate arrives at Sawyer and Hurley's house (while Hurley is watching Xanadu, no less) and Sawyer invites her to the kitchen to share a romantic conversation over a trailer-park staple: wine-in-a-box. Wow, what's next, Sawyer? You gonna show her the pickup you've got on blocks in the backyard? Or maybe ask her out to the next demolition derby? Or perhaps ask her to run away to Vegas so that you can get hitched by Elvis and still make it back in time to work your double shift at Arby's? You're a smooth operator there, Sawyer. Kate asks Sawyer to help her break out Ben, and Sawyer goes to Locke (under the guise of playing a game of Backgammon) and tells him of Kate's plan to have Ben meet with "Bruce Lee from the freighter". He also reveals that Hurley let Miles' location slip, which could be yet another reason why Locke lets him leave the island. Locke decides to find out firsthand what Miles has to say to Ben, and he and Sawyer head to the boathouse to find that Kate has played them: she's already freed Miles and has taken him to Ben. At Locke's house, Kate and Miles break in and head for the basement. Kate shoots the lock off the door (which has already been proven to be nigh impossible by the Mythbusters, but whatever) and Miles and Ben have their meeting. Miles and Ben skip over the blatent exposition (which is a nice change from last season) by simply stating that they both know who Miles works for and why he's there. Miles extorts Ben, saying that he could turn Ben over, or that for 3.2 million dollars he could tell his boss that Ben was already dead. Ben tells him that Charlotte knows he's alive, and Miles tells him that he can "take care of her". Ben mocks Miles and the seemingly random (yeah right) amount of 3.2 million dollars exactly. Miles gives Ben one week to think it over and they leave. Kate pins Miles against the wall, and Miles holds up his end of the deal, telling her that when they got her name they looked up everyone on the flight; they know exactly who she is and exactly what she's done. Locke and Sawyer catch them before they can leave and Locke holds Miles at gunpoint and tells Kate to return to her house. Later at Kate and Claire's home, Locke arrives and asks what Ben and Miles talked about. Kate tells him everything, and Locke banishes her and tells her to be gone by morning. Kate, not one to go quietly, goes to Sawyer, who tells her that if she wants to stay, he'll protect her from Locke. They start to make out and fall back into bed. Kate is... well, I suppose you could say that... I guess it would appear that... oh hell. I'll just say it: Kate's kind of a ho! There, I said it. Flashforward: Kate's mother (also the star witness for the prosecution) sets up a meeting with Kate and tells her that she doesn't want to testify against her, and that she wants to see her grandchild. Kate refuses, telling her that she doesn't want her mother anywhere near him, and ends the meeting. ![]() Sadly, Daniel lost all his money on 3 Card Monte that night. Back at the barracks, Locke has lost his friggin' mind. Maybe it was that last run-in with Jack, or maybe it's his desperate situation, but whatever the reason: Locke has one foot over the line. He enters the boathouse, where Miles has again been tied up and shoves a grenade in his mouth so that that trigger mechanism is held down. He pulls the pin, tells Miles that eventually he'll tell Locke everything he wants to know, but in the meantime "you're going to keep your mouth shut." Miles screams between clenched teeth as Locke leaves him alone. >Kate, after her night of ho-ishness, wakes up in Sawyers arms and kisses him. Sawyer in turn devolves into a horny highschooler and tries to get Kate to "go all the way", presumably so that he can give her his class ring and a promise that they'll keep in touch over the summer. Kate turns him down, and Sawyer again mentions the pregnancy. Kate reveals that she's certain she's not pregnant, and Sawyer rejoices. Kate however, doesn't seem too pleased with his giddyness, and starts to leave. Sawyer calls her out though and tells her that he's going to wait right there because, in his words, "in about a week you'll find some reason to get pissed at Jack, and bounce right back to me." Kate retorts by slapping him and leaving. ![]() Aah! Run! It's Billy Barty, back from the grave! Flashforward: Kate's mother doesn't show up in court and refuses to testify against her, so the prosecutor cuts her a deal - ten years probation, but she can't leave the state. Kate's lawyer starts to argue, but Kate takes the deal, saying that she just wants the whole thing to be over. As she's leaving the courthouse, Jack catches up to her and tells her that the crash story wasn't the only lie he told: he still loves her. He asks her if she wants to grab some coffee, she asks him if he wants to stop by and see "him". Jack is visibly upset by this, and Kate tells him that she knows why he won't see "him" and until he does, there is no "them getting coffee". Kate returns home to her lovely house, and heads upstairs where her son is sleeping. He wakes up and looks up at her, brushing the light blonde hair off his forehead. He calls her mommy and hugs her. "Hi, Aaron", she replies and hugs him back, tears forming in her eyes. That's right: Aaron. Is it the Aaron? Why does Kate have Claire's son and why is she claiming him as her own? Or is it really Kate's son, and she just named him Aaron and he just happens to bare a strong resemblence to Claire's son? My thoughts?

Next week - Episode 4.5 entitled "The Constant": From Lostpedia: "Sayid and Desmond hit a bit of turbulence on the way to the freighter, which causes Desmond to experience some unexpected side effects." Desmond? Side effects? C'mon, how can that not be a cool episode? I have a hunch (since they didn't arrive at the freighter) that Frank deviated from their heading and now Desmond, Sayid, and Frank are caught in "the snowglobe", as Desmond named it. I can't wait. About the Author:Peter Sorensen is a four-toed insurgent from a remote island who spends his days writing and his nights drinking cheap rum and participating in paragovernmental activities. After being deported to the United States over a border dispute, he took up film and animation as a way to pay for his tragic caffeine addiction. When he is not sowing discord on the streets or committing heineous acts of sedition he sometimes finds a moment to sketch. Is it Claire's son? Is it Kate's? Is it Locke and Ben's lovechild?
