D.O.C.
aka: "E.R. - Lost style"
by Peter Sorensen

Ah, Lost. In this episode, Sun learns the identity of her "baby daddy" (without the help of Montel Williams no less) after Juliet examines her; Desmond allows an unlikely enemy to help save the life of another mysterious island inhabitant.

I'm really not sure how to feel about this week's episode. On one hand, it's nice to see that things are starting to come to a head, and that we're making progress with the show's greater mysteries. But on the other hand, I can't help but feel a little overwhelmed and hurried by the new pace the show has adopted. Maybe it's because they waited so long to answer these questions, or maybe I'm just used to a slower plotline, but either way these episodes are barreling quickly towards the season finale, destroying everything in their path.  And now, with the last lines of this episode, we've been thrown back into the theory pit and all the craziness it contains.
The first thing that struck me is that they decided to run all of the medical storylines in the same episode. It starts with Jack, checking in on his patient, err... friend. By the way, nice going there Jack. Within the first few seconds of his conversation with Sun, he's already creeped her the heck out.  Apparently his bedside manner isn't quite what it used to be. He might as well have just said "Hey, I don't want to freak you out and make you think that you're going to die of some weird strain of airborn virus that only kills pregnant women, but yeah. It's probably that."

Then, it continues on with a double shot of hot medical action with the dual storylines of Desmond and crew trying to patch up the pilot, and Sun and Juliet having a cozy little exam... in a hidden room of the discarded hatch where the Others sent their pregnant women to die, of course.

Let's start with Sun. Tonight's episode centered around her, and I have to say that I have never seen such major character development in such a short time. In the flashbacks, not only do we learn more about what began the rift between Sun and Jin, why Jin becomes indebted to Sun's father, and the truth about Jin's parents, we get to see a whole new side to Sun: the totally badass side. When she's not arranging secret meetings with Jin's father, she's coldly blackmailing her own father for $100K, and threatening to make Jin's prostitute mother's fake death "a reality".  Daaaaaamn, girl.

awkward....
"What do you mean, you know about the sperm thing firsthand?"
Meanwhile, on the island, Sun confronts Juliet after her creepout-athon with Jack and is told about the pregnant women dying. Later, Juliet sneaks into Sun's tent, not to engage in a little lovey lovey as I had secretly hoped, but to offer her a helping hand. They sneak out into the jungle to the abandoned maternity ward where Juliet reveals a secret room with examination equipment. Sun finally breaks down and confesses her affair to Juliet and how Jin was found to be infertile back in the real world. Here is where the crazy train starts: Juliet tells her that on this island, men's sperm count is more than quadrupled.

Wait... what?

Ok, so we know the island has weird healing powers and is definitely very magical (or scientifical advanced depending on your theory), but it puts more pep in their step as well? And furthermore, is the island handing out super swimmers because of the women's fertility problems, or because of something else? It seems cosmically cruel to make the men uber-fertile and make the women all die during pregnancy.

Anyway, after that uncomfortable conversation, Juliet reveals that the baby is only about 8 weeks along. This means that Jin actually is the baby's father. It also means that the baby was conceived on the island, and that Jin will most likely die before the third trimester. This is a great set up! Now, we can see a focused Juliet do whatever it takes to make sure that Sun survives and the baby lives. And what makes it better is that it serves both the selfish and the selfless. The selfish because Juliet is partly doing this to satisfy her end of the bargain with Ben. After all, if the Others can have children, her job is done and she can go home. But, after Juliet's "I hate you" comment after her report to Ben, I once again believe that she is trying to do the right thing here and will try to save Sun because she cares for her and the child and won't let them die.

Jin makes with the kung fu
Wow... so everybody WAS kung fu fighting!
On another part of the island though, Desmond, Hurley, Charlie and Jin are doing what they can to help the crashed pilot stay alive when who should pop up from around the corner, but Patchy himself. WHAT THE HELL!? Last time we saw Patchy, he was busy getting his brains  pulped by massive sonic waves. That's generally not something you can just put IcyHot on and walk off. This is another drop in the insanity bucket as now we're faced with some serious questions: Is it really Patchy? If so, how did he survive? If he didn't survive, did the island resurrect him? Or was the whole "tossing you into the fence" thing a setup? Is Locke behind this somehow? Lord, I'm so confused...

Patchy makes a run for it when he sees the Losties, but Jin gets all Bruce Lee on his cycloptic behind and takes him down. He offers his medical services in exchange for his freedom, and Desmond (still reeling from last weeks episode) agrees. Patchy evacuates the blood from the pilot's lung allowing her to breathe, and then wham! We're treated to the next "plot point" slap in the face. Patchy says she should be better in a day or so, to which Charlie replies "She has a hole in her lung!" "...maybe a day and a half", Patchy says.

OK, I get it. The island heals stuff. You can stop beating it into our heads already.

They begrudgingly let Patchy go and Desmond and Charlie go at it a bit over the decision to let him live. Desmond's rebuttal makes the obvious point that Charlie has killed more of them than they have of him, something that Charlie seems not to care about.

Hurley makes a call
"Pizza Hut? Thirty pizzas. You don't deliver here? Damn!"
Favorite Scene of the Night?

The very last one. With the statement that they found the plane and all the survivors were dead, we are given a huge mind blowing mystery. Once the survivors crashed, did DHARMA make a mock crash site and fake thei Losties deaths so that no one would come looking for them? Are they actually dead and in purgatory? Are they just clones of the dead passengers? Regardless of your personal theory, this scene is the one that will be talked about for many weeks to come.
