Frame by Frame: The Lost Season 4 Trailer
Monday, 17 December 2007
imageWhile the rest of the television world is in complete and utter turmoil, it's nice to see that some good can come out of the recent writers strike (other than Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy being off the air I mean).

ABC recently announced that due to the bleak, barren and otherwise desolate primetime schedule(my words, not theirs), the season premiere of Lost will be moved up to Thursday, January 31st in the 9pm time slot, where it will stay, presumably, until the WGA strike is over or until "vampiric mutants wander the post-apocalyptic earth" (again: my words, not theirs).

Along with the announcement, the internet has been abuzz with the release of the new Season Four promo trailer and we've managed to get our greasy little hands on it and do a little digging.

Warning: There Be Spoilers Here.

Below is the trailer in it's entirety, converted to Quicktime. Why Quicktime, you ask? Well, because unlike YouTube videos, you can walk through Quicktime files one frame at a time (simply pause the movie and press the left or right keys).

After the trailer, we'll go a little more in depth with all the surprises in store for us in season 4:

Before we begin, let me say this:  Hell. Yes.

I can't wait for this season to start, because it looks like we're in for one hell of a trip.

WARNING: I know that there are people out there who don't like to know anything at all about the upcoming season, so if you're one of them, walk away now. There are things below that can definitely be labeled as major spoilers, so you've been warned.

Ok, here we go:

We start off with the rescue:

Image
The searchlight from above.
Image
The high tech pilot.

Last season ended with the Losties contacting Naomie's boat, something that Locke was vehemently against. Unfortunately, he made his argument by putting a knife through Naomi's back, so the rest of the group wasn't inclined to listen to him.

As we see in the promo trailer, Naomi didn't have the only helicopter. There is a fleeting glimpse of the Losties standing on the beach with searchlights coming from above, signifying that the rescue team may be not be arriving by sea, but by air.

We also get a glimpse of another pilot, and here's where it gets interesting. Remember how none of the Losties recognized Naomi's high tech phone? As you can see, the pilot's entire flightsuit is just as advanced, almost... futuristic?

You see where I'm going with this?

Perhaps they've been on that island a lot longer than they think they have.

Then we come to Jacob (click left or right to navigate; click on image to enlarge):

As we can see in the trailer, the helicopter(s) head inland at some point, eventually finding Jacob's cabin. We again see Jacob sitting in his rocking chair, but he somehow looks different than before.  I'm guessing that the person we saw before was a stand-in actor, and that this is the real actor playing Jacob.

As you can also see, Hurley stumbles upon the cabin at some point as well (maybe with the helicopter, maybe on his own later). You can see him looking around the cabin and peeking inside. It's followed by a shot of someone suddenly looking back out at him. Does this mean that Hurley meets Jacob? Or is it just a sly editing trick to make us think he does?

Either way, let's hope he says more than just "Help me" this time.

Then, we get to one of the major spoilers
(click left or right to navigate; click on image to enlarge):

The trailer is chock full of underwater shots looking up, water churning, Hurley smiling underwater, etc. As you can see in the above gallery, there's even a shot of water with the number "6" superimposed over it (it only lasts a frame or two). Then, we get the big shocker: looking over Hurley's shoulder, we see Charlie as he takes off his sunglasses and looks at Hurley. His hair is shorter and he's wearing a clean leather motorcycle jacket. We know that Hurley didn't know Charlie before the island, so this has to be present day, or in a flash-forward (which there will be much more of as the next 3 seasons continue).

What does this mean? Well, there are a couple theories:
1. Charlie lives. Somehow, he survives underwater and/or escapes somehow (possibly through the gaping hole that Mikhael blew in the base?)

2. Charlie "joins the Force". Just like how Boone or Jack's dad shows up now and then in ghost form or visions, Charlie will be back in some capacity, even though he is definitely dead.

or the most controversial:
3. Charlie is off the island. When Naomi crashes on the island, she makes a toss-aside comment that they found the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 and all the passengers were dead. It isn't given much thought, but there is a current theory floating around that the people on the island may still have counterparts in the real world, and even though island Charlie is dead, he still has a doppleganger out there somewhere in the real world (more on this theory in weeks to come).

Either way, Charlie is back, and that is definitely a good thing.

Last, but not least, there are the lemons:

Image
When life gives you lemons...
Image
...well, you know the rest.

There is a brief shot of a pile of fruit (lemons, limes, pears, etc) sitting on the beach that gets abruptly blown up. Now, you may ask yourself "Why blow up a pile of fruit?" and at first, it may not make any sense.

But if I'm right, then this short little sequence could have drastic effects on the rest of the season:

Sorry, this part is for members only and may contain spoilers. If you'd like to read it, please LOG IN or REGISTER.

On another note, I think that the number 6 in the water earlier is to indicate that only six Losties will make it off the island (hence "The Oceanic Six") after this bloody conflict. We know Jack and Kate make it off, but who else?

Will they leave peacefully, or will it be a dramatic escape in the midst of the upcoming confrontation?

Most importantly, why would Jack want so badly to go back?

Let me just say Pete, that it is wonderful to see you writing about my favorite show again. I can't wait! The end of January is the beginning of Awesome.

And let me just say Stevo, that is is wonderful to have your favorite show to write about again. It seems like ages since I've watched something that actually blew my mind (I'm looking at you, Heroes) and it's starting to look like this season is definitely going to do it.

Also, this season has 80% more Brian K. Vaughn, which I don't have to tell you is tantamount to storytelling nirvana. I'm pretty sure that even God himself has cleared his schedule on Thursday nights.

Pete, if your theory is correct and Dharma had no way to get back to the island when the hatch was still around, then who would have been dropping supplies in the second season. It was like an air drop of Dharma style food.

Good theories nonetheless. I used to hate Charlie and then he suddenly became an interesting character. "Greatest Hits" was one of my favorite episodes last season and his sacrifice truly made him a phenomenal character.

Manzy704 - Excellent point. Even though they found the food drop, no one saw or heard a plane or helicopter actually drop the food. The only reason they thought it was dropped was because of the parachute and beacon attached to it. Right now, I have a few theories about that (don't I always?):

1. It was actually dropped. As we've learned, there is almost no way on or off the island (Michael and Walt had to be given strict instructions to get out. The parachute means it was a sky drop, but the beacon means they didn't know where it would end up. So it was a blind drop. I think that it was either the last food drop before The Others took over and its just been sitting there for some time (most of the food was canned or non-perishable I think), or possibly that Ben has been using the underwater station to keep up appearances that Dharma is still in charge of the island project (hence why he would have told the others it was destroyed). Or, it's even possible that Dharma has a reason to keep the Losties alive that will be revealed later and made the food drop at great risk (they've suffered 5 fatalities during food drops in the past).

2. It was planted by the Others. The parachute and beacon were just red herrings to throw the Losties off and make them think it was left recently by Dharma. The reason I think this is because the ID numbers on the food matches the ID numbers on the beer found in "Roger Workman's" truck, which we know came from the Dharma compound. Could it have been a trick to get the Losties to take the beacon back to their camp and reveal their position to the Others (their leader Ben had recently been taken)?

3. It didn't get there by natural means. As is the case with most things on the island, they don't make any sense until they're explained later on. Maybe there's a good reason why the drops are triggered by a lockdown procedure. As the blast door says: "activity minimal during lockdown and restocking procedures". Maybe the drops are accomplished by a method that could be harmful to humans, which is why the lockdown occurs. Or maybe it's just another insurance method, like the explosives in the Flame. If there's ever a lockdown, food is delivered automatically for the survivors?

Honestly, who knows? This show is so weird it could turn out to be run by goblins for all we know. lol.

Niiiiice. I see the rumor mill is already in overdrive Pete and all I can say is SAWEEEEEEET this season can't come soon enough. The fact they've brought it forward to my birthday is just the icing on the cake (I think it's their way of making the recent dearth of decent tv up to me).

I'll weigh in with my theories in the new year so a happy and safe holidays to you all!
