Heroes: The Eclipse, Part 1 & 2

Heroes s03e10 and e11: The Eclipse

I think what bothers me the most about this season of Heroes isn't that the episodes are so bad, it's that they're formulaicly bad. Every episode seems to basically be one long string of "blah blah blah... here's the clearly defined mission for the week... blah blah blah... here's the problem that seems to want to prevent that mission from completing... blah blah blah... [insert male cast member shirtless or in some form of undress for the lonely female viewers]... blah blah blah... touchy-feely moment between two characters so that we can play the "drama music" and have the actors really tap into that high school emo saccharine sweet love moment... blah blah blah... shocking revelation about a character... blah blah blah... cliffhanger ending.

Take that basic formula, add in more waffling than a Bennett family breakfast, and you have the two-part Heroes event, "The Eclipse".

Heroes s03e09: It's Coming

I'll admit it - I wasn't looking forward to this week's episode of Heroes. The last few weeks have been extraordinarily lackluster and unnecessarily complicated. I found myself wondering if this was going to be like Season 2, something to chuckle about later after all the disappointment had faded.

After the recent story about NBC firing two producers from Heroes after "creative differences" regarding the direction the series is taking, I have to admit that I went into this week's episode with a fair amount of trepidation and concern. Just what could be happening in the upcoming episodes that is so controversial that NBC could possibly warrant sacking Jeph Loeb, one of the great comic writers of our time?

I got my answer last night.

From the very outset, I knew this was going to be a bad episode, as it's essentially the culmination of a full season's worth of bad ideas. The show's near-strict adherence to Hiro's "I will not travel into the past...okay, I will but only when I really need to" philosophy, the struggles amongst the ever-growing members of the Petrelli family, and the latest entry in the series' "flashback episode" sub-genre all came together last night in what I can only describe as a "massive clusterf**k of nonsense".
