Image HEROES
Four Months Later
aka: "Don't mess with a man on a coffee break"
by Peter Sorensen

Season Two opens by revealing the fates of our favorite pair of superhero siblings...no, not the Wonder Twins... Nathan and Peter Petrelli. A new threat presents itself, Hiro meets his idol in feudal Japan (surprise! he's a cracker!) and Claire Bennet prances around for long enough to give me a whole new subsection in the "ol' spank bank".

The long wait is finally over. Heroes is back, baby!

The season kicks off with a look at where all of our favorite heroes have ended up. Ando and Hiro's father keep a constant vigil at the plaza where Hiro disappeared, Claire and her father have gone into hiding in California, Parkman and Mohinder have started up their own version of a Paul Reiser sitcom (I'll give you a hint: it's not Mad About You) and Nathan Petrelli is kickin' it Al Gore style with a snazzy new beard and drinking problem.

That's not to say that Al Gore has a drinking problem, but wouldn't he be even cooler if he did?

To begin, Ando and Mr. Nakamura have obviously become close associates since Hiro's disappearance (this is briefly covered in the graphic novel). As they sit in the plaza talking, a photograph falls out of Mr. Nakamura's newspaper. The photo is of Mr. Nakamura, but it has the "godsend" symbol scrawled over his face in red. Bingo. Enter the "ticking clock".

GEEKTIONARY
Ticking Clock (tih·king' klok) n.

1. A well known and time honored literary device in which an element is introduced to a story that sets a well-defined deadline for the story, character, or action. Named for the slowly ticking countdown clock on a bomb, it adds an element of drama and tension as the deadline slowly counts down to a set endpoint.

2. A dramatic device in which some event looming in the near future requires that the conflict reach a speedy resolution.

The ticking clock in this instance is the photograph, as it puts a death sentence on whoever receives it, and the countdown is running to see who will live, who will die, and who will stand revealed as the killer.

The Petrellis

In New York, Nathan Petrelli is obviously still shaken from the explosion and the resulting loss of his brother. Nothing is shown about how he survived the explosion, and I can only assume that's because it will be shown in depth later on in the season as a flashback. Judging by his gruff new "Brawny Man" look, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he did not in fact take the Senate gig. Nathan and Mama Petrelli have a bit of a falling out and she storms out to find (surprise, surprise) a photo of her with the godsend logo over her face in red. She later goes to see Mr. Nakamura and we see that the two photos are two parts of a larger photo, and we also learn that there are more members of the original company that we have yet to see. Why do I get the feeling we're going to soon? Hahaha.

Lethal Weapon - The Fat Years
My Two Dads

Over at the not-gay-at-all Parkman/Suresh residence, Matt finally passes his detective test (thanks to his powers) and we find that not only has he divorced his wife, he has adopted Molly Walker and I can only assume that he and Suresh have joint custody in some kind of "alternative life partner" situation. Mmmmhmmm.

Molly has been having nightmares and we're again introduced to the phantom villain from last season's finale in a very "Eye of Sauron - I can see you" moment. Suresh, meanwhile, is approached by the incomparable Stephen Toblowsky, who plays the new head of the Company (or at least a major player in it). He offers Suresh a job with the company and reveals the source of their funding: he can change metal into gold. Whether this is an alchemical kind of power, or whether he can change anything he touches into gold like King Midas remains to be seen.

The Bennetts

Hidden away in sunny California, the Bennetts are doing their best to stay inconspicuous. Claire struggles to hide her gifts and abilities (super powered and otherwise) while simultaneously trying to avoid the obviously unwanted (I can hope, right?) flirting from a fellow classmate named West (really, who names their kid "West"?) who just so happens to be able to fly. Let's hope that they're not related in some distant way and we have a "Luke and Leia" situation on our hands. We're also treated to the best scene of the night: after taking enough crap from his annoyingly blusterous wageslave manager at "Copy Kingdom", Noah Bennett simultaneously lays the smack down and lays down the law about how and when he's going to work. Woot! There is not a man alive who has not wanted to do that exact same thing to his boss at one time or another. This was definitely the cheer-worthy moment of the night. Later, we find out that Suresh and Bennett are working together to bring the Company down once and for all, but c'mon, who didn't see that coming?

Who are you callin' scruffy lookin?
Hiro

Finally, we get around to Hiro. Thrown back in time to feudal Japan, Hiro saves Takezo Kensei from a group of bandits, only to find out that not only is he not the real Kensei, but that Takezo Kensei is caucasian, English, and kind of a dick. Now, despite my personal dislike for "David Anders" Holt (we went to high school together, long story) I have to admit that he kicked ass as Takezo Kensei.

"Anders" plays Takezo Kensei with a breezy charm, an almost "Han Solo"-ian panache. He kinda reminds me of Wash from Firefly, and people who know me know that that is no small compliment. So, although I still have an outstanding promise to punch him in the face the next time I see him, for his role in Heroes I will promise that it will be quick and I will try not to mess up his face.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot. There are two new heroes: Maya and Alejandro. They are fugitives wanted for murder and are traveling to America to seek out Dr. Suresh. From last weeks graphic novel in which they were introduced, it appears that Maya has the ability to infect anyone around here with a killer virus, and that somehow Alejandro can keep it at bay. Quite frankly, I get a real "Paulo and Nikki" vibe from these two, so I'm not going to go into great depths until they establish themselves a bit more.

Finally, we get the big surprise of the night:

Sorry, this part is for members only and may contain spoilers. If you'd like to read it, please LOG IN or REGISTER.

Registration is free, takes only a moment, and allows you to access member only content like this.

So all in all, another great episode from the unstoppable Heroes machine. I can't wait to find out who the other members of the Company are, who's killing them off, who Molly keeps seeing in her nightmares, and how Hiro helps aimless Kensei find his destiny and become the hero he is supposed to be.

Oh yeah, and I'll be keeping an eye on that ticking clock.

Ahhh finally, after a dearth of TV reviews, you're back!!!
Looking forward to your weekly wraps Pete. Any plans on regular reviews of other shows?

Personally I thought the episode was a little mixed. It felt a bit too methodical in laying out the seasons plot points to the point where it gave away too much information. Case in point Hiro and the kensei arc. Although he’s oblivious too it, you know that he’ll end up becoming Kensei and marry the swordsman’s daughter yada yada yada. Now that I know this I kind of want him to just hurry up and do it so he can get back to NY and join up with the rest of the crew. Also this opens up a whole can of time travellin worms since if Hiro always was kensei then how can he be modern day hiro too? It’s early and I can’t explain myself properly.

I also thought they took too long in re-establishing the characters and just getting in to the swing of thing. But hey, it’s only the first ep and a solid one at that, I just hope it ramps up big time from here.

What are your thoughts on peter and how he ended up chained in the container? Why was he wearing the symbol necklace?

P.S George Takei – weakest.death.ever
P.P.S Wasn't there supposed to be a heroes origins show during the hiatus? I had a weird feeling that I had missed out on a whole bunch of shit during the first 15mins the episode.

Thanks for the comment, Tron!

At the end of the week, I'm going to try to put together a "what's new" article with mini-reviews of all the new shows (still have to watch some of them). Thankfully, we have a bumper crop of sci-fi/geek TV shows this year, so we'll see which ones I pick up full-time.

About the Kensei/Hiro arc: True, most of us are pretty sure that Hiro ends up becoming Kensei. After seeing the Takezo Kensei documentary over at yamagatofellowship.org, the pieces all seem to be there. Then again, we all knew that Peter was going to be "the bomb". Sometimes it's not about the end result, but the story of "how" he got there.

I'm interested to see how the whole thing plays out. Hiro could become Kensei, but it seems more likely that Hiro will be too afraid to change history even further and will secretly help Takezo become the Kensei. 'Porting him around, helping him dodge arrows, finishing his trials, etc. Maybe it will be a combination of both and we'll get to see how what they do in the upcoming episodes gets misinterpreted and becomes legend.

As for Peter, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that after the explosion, Peter may have crash landed somewhere and the Company had a hand in finding him, shaving off that ridiculous hair (Milo Ventimiglia finally gets his wish!) sedating him and putting him in that container. I think that the Company was secretly shipping him to another location, but that the Lucky Charm Leprechauns found him on accident first.

George Takei - 100% agree on the "weakest death ever", taking the spot of Peter's "mirror shard in his head" from last season.

And as for Heroes:Origins, yes. It was supposed to be inbetween seasons 1 and 2, but production took too long to ramp up and casting took forever, so instead they are supposed to be introducing it between seasons 2 and 3, but this time they've attached some big names to it. Kevin Smith is rumored to be directing an episode, and other directors like Brian Singer and Eli Roth have all been courted by NBC. Tarantino was approached, but apparently turned it down because he had no idea what "Heroes" was. I guess the guy doesn't get to watch too much TV.

Plus, I think a lot of us felt like we were missing something because the writers made subtle comments to events we haven't seen, which will probably be fully explained in flashback episodes later in the season.

One thing I want to find out about is whether Nathans scarred and burnt face was real and he's somehow hiding it (plastic surgery, superpower) or whether Nathan is just crazier than a coconut.

1) Excellent review. It's nice to have your captions back especially.

2) 2-8 in 3v3. Not too bad for a first week.

I swear that voice Parkman hears in Molly's head is just the audio lifted from Fellowship of the Ring.

They completely brushed over Nikki, Dl and the little boy (forget his name at the moment). Maybe there are too many characters now to fit into one show. Dug your review by the way.

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for the comments Manzy704 and Louischez!

Manzy704: Hey, welcome back! I thought the exact same thing. I half expected to see a huge fiery eyeball staring down at them. Maybe that's what Parkman and Mohinder have going: a totally hetero partnership like Frodo and Samwise did... wait a minnit.

Paul: Welcome to the site! I'm not too bummed that they left Nikki and Micah out of the premiere (it's not my favorite storyline) but they will be appearing in the upcoming season. From what I've heard, DL is not around (either dead, missing, in jail, etc) and Nikki leaves Micah in the hands of a new character while she leaves to pursue her own problems. And if you think there are already too many characters, wait until they finish introducing all of the new batch. We still haven't seen Kristen Bell (from Veronica Mars) and from what I've been reading online, we'll meet quite a few more of the previous generation of Heroes as they get picked off one by one by the hooded assassin.

Also, did anyone notice that Ando absentmindedly bumped into Nathan Petrelli right before they found the photo of Kaito in the newspaper? Nathan also entered the apartment minutes before his mother left and found the photo of her right outside the door. Add that to the fact that the assassin went over the side of the building with Kaito and then vanished, it looks like they're trying really hard to pin the murder on Nathan. It's not going to end up being him, of course (possibly Sylar with Candace's powers) but he's a suspect.
