Tonights episode of Heroes really showed off what parts of the show work, and what parts fall flat (I'm looking in your direction Maya and Alejandro). This is where I would normally praise the show for it's infinite superhero goodness, but honestly I was a little let down by this weeks episode. Thankfully, by the end of the episode, it had totally redeemed itself. Now, before I start my review this week I want to point out that while I'm writing this I am also fighting a serious cold. It seems to happen around this time every year, so I'm used to it. However, if my review sucks this week (as I'm always sure it will) you can just go right ahead and blame the massive amounts of gnarly mucus my brain is currently floating around in. Now, with that lovely image firmly embedded in your brain, let's push ahead, shall we? Hiro Incognito Upon finding Takezo Kensei drunk under a tree, Hiro nearly drowns him, and then realizes that in order to repair the harm he's done to the timeline there is only one option: Hiro must take up the armor of the Kensei and fulfill the story himself. Like we didn't see that coming. Hiro shows a mastery of his time bending powers as he takes on twelve bandits all by himself by freezing time and snatching their weapons from them, all the while making the swordmaker's daughter swoon. Unfortunately, this mastery doesn't last long as later on, Hiro allows the real Takezo to be shot repeatedly with arrows. Ouch. You can't win 'em all, I guess. But, you can't keep a good Hero down: Takezo's wounds miraculously heal and it's revealed that he too has a power. Now, whether his regenerative powers are going to be somehow linked to Claire and her strikingly similar abilities remains to be seen. ![]() Every time a Hero dies, an angel gets it's wings Matt Parkman does his whole detective schtick this episode by first examining the rooftop where Kaito Nakamura was killed and yet another hint is dropped that it might be Nathan Petrelli: while trying to piece together the mystery surrounding how the assailant escaped, Parkman's boss sarcastically asks him if he "knows anyone who can fly". Parkman responds with a ridiculous "I'm trying really hard not to show that I actually do know someone who can fly" face. Nice poker face there, Parkman. Another nice little treat is that Parkman meets Ando, who is having his statement taken. Even through all the craziness of last season, Parkman and Ando never officially met until now. As the Emperor would say: "Now the circle is complete." Wait, maybe that was Mufasa from Lion King. I don't know, my brain's all fuzzy. Anyway... Forensics finds Mama Petrelli's fingerprint on the photo, and they immediately haul her in for questioning. Parkman tries to read her mind, but she's too wily for that, and gives Parkman a psychic bitch slap. Unfortunately, not before Mama Petrelli reveals that her and Sulu used to "beam aboard" in the past. Yikes. We also learn that in addition to basically being everywhere and meaning everything, the symbol that is so prevalent in the show was also used by Papa Petrelli as the logo for his law firm. How absolutely... inconsequential. In yet another feeble attempt to confuse the identity of the real killer, Nathan Petrelli arrives at the police station to bail his mother out, when suddenly the lights go out, and Mama Petrelli is attacked in the locked interrogation room. Parkman and Nathan break in from behind the two-way mirror but there is no attacker in the room. We're given one incredible clue beforehand, though. (more on that below) ![]() Apparently, Peter woke up in 1994. Peter Petrelli wakes up and finds himself tied to a chair with the Lucky Charms Leprechaun guys leering over him. We learn that they were suppose to steal a container full of iPods in order to settle a score with the local crime boss. They suspect Peter has the iPods, and proceed to administer a beat down on our poor hero, who still can't remember anything. The goons leave and Peter is cleaned up by the Leprechaun Goon's little sister, who discovers that even after all the abuse, Peter doesn't have a mark on him. Superhero healing powers FTW! Later, Peter unconsciously uses D.L.'s phasing ability to escape his binds, and attempts to escape when suddenly lil' sis is set upon by two local thugs, one of whom turns out to be the crime boss's favorite son. Peter, ever the badass, sticks around long enough to blast one of them unconscious with an EMP pulse and punch the son across the room using Nikki's super strength. Now, despite the fact I was jumping around the room shouting "Get 'im, get 'im" (as is my typical fashion during any superhuman brawl), I do have one problem with all this: Just how is Peter doing all this? Last time we saw him, Peter barely had control over his own abilities and had to consciously will each power into use by thinking of the person it belonged to (minus Claire's healing, of course which seems to be an unconscious power). Now, even though he's totally forgotten everything about himself, he somehow seems to have full and total control of all his abilities and can use them at will. Maybe it's the new haircut. Maybe it's the new Eddie Vedder flannel/grunge rocker look he's sporting. Regardless, he's not the same person he was last season, that's for sure. Mohinder the Spy I will be the first to admit that I really dislike the Mohinder character. I still do. However, this season, he does actually have a part to play in the story, so thank God for that. Mohinder is sent on a mission by his new boss at the Company to track down another possible case of the rare virus that seems to be only affecting heroes. Mohinder packs his bags and sets out to find and possibly cure this person, and sure enough, once we see the title saying he's in Haiti, we all know who it is: The Haitian. Continuing the story arc from the graphic novels, The Haitian believes that God is punishing him for abusing his powers and has resigned himself to death. Before that can happen, though, trumpets sound and Mohinder the Messiah shows up with his magical antidote blood to save the day. Weak. Mohinder lets it slip that he works for a company, and the Haitian mindwipes him and escapes (or so we're led to believe). As it turns out later, it was all part of Noah Bennett's intricate plan to reunite the baddest crimefighting due since Starsky and Hutch: Bennett and the Haitian. ![]() ...stuck in the middle with you... Claire again spends most of the episode whining about having to try to fit in, which is totally OK because she's hot when she's pouting. After seeing a presentation in school about the newt's ability to regenerate lost limbs, Claire starts to become curious about what her own limits are. Later, back at her house, Claire decides to test her theories by chopping off a toe and seeing if it grows back. Seriously. There wasn't even alcohol involved. She just suddenly decides to imitate the statue from Lost and snips off her pinky toe with a pair of scissors. Ouch. Before you know it, boom. The toe has grown back. Hypothesis proven, mankind improved by the knowledge. One little snag though: that creepy flying kid West was peeping on her (obviously trying to catch her naked, the skeezy perv) and saw the entire thing. Hmmm... awkward. How do you seque into that conversation? Meanwhile, Noah Bennett reveals that before his untimely (and messy) death, Isaac painted a series of eight paintings that haven't been seen yet. Bennett unrolls the one that he has and we see that it's a prediction of Kaito Nakamura's death. This part felt kinda lame to me, as it's basically just a reason for Bennett to run around this season chasing the paintings, much like Hiro's sword quest from last season. The fringes Maya and Alejandro continue to make their way to America (and hopefully into the actual plotline). We learn a little more about the nature of their powers as Maya, upon being separated from Alejandro, begins to seep the black ooze we've seen in the prior episode out of her eyes. Alejandro arrives just in time, and somehow absorbs and eliminates the ooze. Still no Nikki and Micah (which I'm still grateful for). Which leads us finally to the big, mindblowing conclusion of the night, which I have painstakingly pieced together using my keen intellect and vast network of network spies. Ok, so I just made it up off the top of my head. Regardless, the real killer is:
Sorry, this part is for members only and may contain spoilers. If you'd like to read it, please LOG IN or REGISTER. So that's it for this week. We have a new "gotta catch 'em all" quest for Bennett, a new possiblity for the identity of the Heroes killer, and about ten and a half boxes of Kleenex that I've gone through just trying to write this thing. See what I put myself through for you people? Haha! Peter Sorensen is a part time reviewer and will someday meet his untimely (and messy) death. Thoughts? Opinions? Get Well Soon Wishes? Nice write up Pete, as always!
Like you I had mixed feelings about this episode, but as always, by the end I'm chomping at the bit for next week's installemnt. The thing that's annoying me most at the moment is the pacing. I thought now the show is a worldwide phenomenon they could dispense with the endless baiting to keep people coming back and really get into developing the series. When I think back tho the first season a lot of stuff happened but in terms of overall plot development we didn't learn all that much. Sure we met a lot of characters and their lives inevitably became intertwined, but it was all sort of by the numbers stuff. Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for this show, I just want it to be more, more ,MORE!. I completely agree with Maya and her bro becoming a major waste of time. Obviously thier powers will become an integral part of the story but why make them such a bore? It just feels like they are sucking up valuable [insert favourite hero here] ass kicking time. Seriously, give us a reason for them being there and soon so we can become invested in the characters or get rid of them. You're usually pretty good with your predictions but I'm not sold on the killer being nathan/Candace as you put it. Obviously the killer (is it just one?) has 7 or whatever poeple to off and of those isn't mamma petrelli the only one nathan knows? I can't remember if Nathan met Hiro's dad in the first season. Candace can make anyone see anything at all so she doesn't really need to assume the form of someone they know just to get close enough to kill them and last season she showed a compassionate side (I still think in her true form she's a minger). Why be mopy old nathan and grow a dirty beard, deal with family issues and wallow at a bar with your hot daughter on the phone? I think this season she'll turn out fighting for good. But...... I'm probably wrong. Hiro Horn Rim Haitan Uber Peter Ando's hair = Awesomecake Looking forward to next week Oh and great TV round up BTW. Dexter rules.

Thanks for the comment, Tron!
As we saw in the graphic novel, Candace had kind of a rough adolescence, and came out of it basically assuming that all people are superficial. Linderman gave her a job, a purpose, a life. The show almost made it seem like she considered him a father figure. So, one could assume that when Linderman died, Candace spiraled down and probably began working for the new villain this season (who I really want to see already). Having worked so closely with Linderman, Candace would no doubt know every one of the original group, and all of the current Heroes. I'm working off of the assumption that Candace is helping the "big bad" this season to get her own revenge as well. Maybe Nathan wasn't wallowing in the bar because of his predicament. Maybe Candace, looking like Nathan, was wallowing in the bar because of her predicament. Then again, Candace may not even play a part in this season. I'm only going on this assumption because it seems like the woman Sylar is talking to in the sneak previews has the ability to change the environment around them. Maybe the new villian has everyone's power too, like Peter. That would be a showdown.

Hmmmm.. methinks I should get a hold of the graphic novels, but not sure if you can get them here in OZ. What you described certainly lends more weight to the candice theory. I don't get the sneak peaks either since I get my eps from suckling on the sweet teet that is bit torrent and they end bang on the credits.
I can only hope that if there is another mega showdown between uber powerful characters it doesn't underwhelm like last seasons 'behind closed doors because we can't afford the CG' sylar v peter battle.

Pete is not TrOn. Although, I'm relatively sure that if they were to meet, they would become heterosexual life partners. Come to think of it, weren't we thinking about moving to Australia?

Haha. Can't a man enjoy another man's TV reviews? I came across this site last year from digg and Pete's writing is by far the most interesting, funny and insightful. Plus I'm a designer and it's a pretty damn nice Joomla site. As long as you don't mind hot weather, nice people and beautiful beaches, a move to Australia wouldn't be one to regret ;-)

Thanks for the comments, Tr0n and kittyfarts!
@kittyfarts: That is a great name. I chuckle every time I see it. And sorry to dissapoint you, but there's only one man out there worthy of my hetero life-partnership. That man is the baby Jesus. Kidding! @Tr0n: Thank you for the kind compliments and I'm glad you like the site. I've spent a lot of time working on it, and hopefully it's constantly improving. Also if you haven't noticed, there is now a User Profile section for all registered users. Just click on the Your Account link under the main menu and you can upload a comment avatar, update your profile information, etc. (I've been meaning to send out a newsletter with instructions, but premiere week has been busier than I thought it would be. That, and I'm lazy.)

Entertaining review as usual! I really wish I hadn't read the spoiler section because you are probably right and I wish I would have seen that coming! I'm at odds with a lot of the fanbase because I like Nathan's character and while I thought keeping him alive negated the sacrifice he made for Peter/New York, I was happy to know that one day, he and Peter might be able to kick some ass together. I've never been too bothered by Mohinder or Parkman and this season has some promise for them. As for Nikki and Paulo, I mean Alejandro and Maya, meh.
