This Week in Comics (April 22nd - 29th)
Monday, 30 April 2007
Image A new segment from BleepingGeek.com that covers the comic book releases for the week (well, just the ones I like to read, that is).

This week we see the two Avengers teams mourning in their own ways, the worst superhero temp job ever, two different prison escapes, and killer robotic alien penguins.

I kid you not.

This is an incomplete list for this week, as it's a new segment. Monday of next week, we'll continue with a longer list.

ImageBlue Beetle 14:
The New Blue Beetle has a run in with Guy Gardner, great comic banter ensues. They have barbeque, battle alien robot penguins, and ponder the strange intricacies of The Ultra-Humanite's origins. This series is yet another shining example of how the supporting cast of a comic is just as important as the hero.

ImageCatwoman 66:
Holly is having a rough day. Filling in for Selina as Catwoman, she manages to be unmasked on live streaming video, have the crap kicked out of her by an amateur villain with boomboom gloves, almost get arrested AGAIN, all in the course of one issue. Time to wrap it up, lady. Meanwhile, Selina's hard fought battle to remove Holly from all of Gotham's crime systems comes to an end, just in time for Holly to watch Detective Lenahan meet a violent end at the hands of two rejects from Rocky IV. This series needs to get rid of Holly once and for all. How many times do we have to watch her screw up?

ImageDaredevil 96:
Matt is called in to help sort through Melvin Potter's (aka "Gladiator") bloody fiasco in Ryker's. He's not much help, though, when it's revealed that Melvin did kill all those people, he knew he killed all those people, and he's faking the amnesia. After a messy escape attempt, Daredevil and Melvin throw down and it's revealed that someone has been controlling Melvin and coordinated the escape. Daredevil gets pretty beat up and Melvin escapes to once again adopt his Gladiator persona.

ImageFallen Son - The Death of Captain America 02: skullPICK OF THE WEEK!skull
In this ongoing series, we see how the death of Marvel Comics greatest hero has affected the people around him. In this issue, we see how the two fractured halves of the Avengers (the Mighty Avengers led by Iron Man, and the New Avengers led by Luke Cage and Spidey) are dealing with his death. For the Mighty Avengers, its business as usual and smug self-righteousness aplenty. For the New Avengers, however, the loss of one of their friends is proving hard to recover from. Jeph Loeb crafts a great tale of the opposing sides while Ed McGuinness pencils and... well, he's Ed friggin' McGuinness

ImageNew Excalibur 19:
Nocturne is busy recovering from her stroke so that Juggernaut can cram a clumsy love interest story into the book. Meanwhile, Lionheart tries to kill the Shadow King, the rest of the team battles Shadow X (evil XMen clones) and they all act very British. Message to writers: More action, less talky. You don't have the team dynamic for a dialog book.

ImageOutsiders Annual:
This is what it's all been leading up to. Concluding their 1 Year Later story arc, we finally see how Arsenal/Roy/Red Arrow left the team, the circumstances revolving around the teams faked deaths, the heartbreaking loss of Shift, the introduction of Captain Boomerang Jr. to the team, and Black Lightning's return to freedom. This has been a consistantly good book this year, and I have high hopes for next year. Scott McDaniel pencils.
