Secret Invasion Scorecard: Week Two
Thursday, 17 April 2008

This week, in a tie-in to in Marvel's mega-crossover event "Secret Invasion", the infiltration of Earth claims it's first A-list superhero.

Editor note: Sorry to all the Hank Pym fans out there, but c'mon - Yellowjacket? B-List all the way. -Ed.

Over the last five issues of the Captain Marvel miniseries, nagging questions have surfaced regarding his apparent return from the dead and in the course of the final issue a Skrull is revealed... but not quite the way we thought.

Captain Marvel #5

ImageDuring Marvel's "Civil War" event, it was revealed that Captain Marvel was once again amongst the living. Thought dead from cancer decades ago, it was soon revealed to the superheroes of the world that the current Captain Marvel was actually the Captain Marvel they knew that had accidentally traveled forward in time from the past to the present day after an accidental trip through the Negative Zone.

And things just got weirder from there.

After presenting himself to the world at large, Captain Marvel began to have strange memory glitches and became obsessed with a classic painting, sometimes staring into it for hours and hours. After Cobalt Man was captured and revealed to be a Skrull agent in Captain Marvel #3, he accused Captain Marvel himself of being a Skrull, throwing his time travel story into harsh scrutiny as suspicions arose.

Assuming the worst, Iron Man (with the help of Ms. Marvel) hatched a plot to temporarily trap Captain Marvel in the Negative Zone while they assembled a way to contain him for questioning. It was all for nothing, however, as Captain Marvel regained his memory and escaped the Negative Zone by way of a portal back  to Earth... a Skrull portal.

Met on the other side by his friend and SHIELD liason Agent Sante (who had been following clues on her own and had already pieced together the truth), it's revealed that he is not the real Captain Marvel after all, only a Skrull body - combined with Captain Marvel's DNA and implanted with his thoughts and memories - designed to infiltrate Earth.

There's one problem though: Even though he's a Skrull agent, he looks like Captain Marvel, thinks like Captain Marvel, has all of Captain Marvel's memories, and more importantly believes that he is Captain Marvel. Skrull or not, this new Captain Marvel turns his back on his intended purpose and devotes himself to helping the human race and fighting against the oncoming Skrull army as the original Captain would have.

Which brings our compiled list of known Skrulls to:

  • Elektra - revealed in New Avengers #31
  • Black Bolt - revealed in New Avengers: Illuminati #5
  • The Revolutionary - revealed in Avengers: The Initiative
    Annual
    #1
  • Cobalt Man - revealed in Captain Marvel #3
  • Valentina Allegra de Fontaine - revealed in Secret Invasion Prologue
  • Dum Dum Dugan - revealed in Secret Invasion Prologue
  • Edwin Jarvis - revealed in Secret Invasion #1
  • Henry Pym  - revealed in Secret Invasion #1
  • Captain Marvel - revealed in Captain Marvel #5

Who do you think the next Skrull will be?
