Heroes Comic: The Man With Too (Much) Brains
    Tuesday, 15 January 2008

Ugh. The title alone  should give you a hint as to how bad the comic was this week.

The Heroes Graphic Novel hits an all-new low this week as they introduce Matt Nuenberg, who's special ability is that he's really, really smart. That's it. No laser beam eyes, or super speed, or diamond-hard skin... just really smart.

What really gets me is how incredibly original the issue is (sarcasm). Let's do the run-down, shall we?

    Matt Neunberg:
is a high school student who doesn't fit in
      feels alienated by his powers
      is discovered by the Company
      is betrayed by the Company.

Gee... how astoundingly creative. Someone send that writing staff a fruit basket.

The basic plot boils down to this: Matt is a nerd. Woe is him. Life is tough when you're smart. Boo frikkin' Hoo. The super-hot popular girl asks him to sign up for the talent show and he does it because it's not weird at all that lil' Miss Hotttie would seek out the schools biggest shut-in.  His talent at the talent show is basically standing there while random people (teachers? people off the street?) ask him question after question. Obviously, he gets them all correct (including rattling off Pi to a dozen decimal places), and instead of people being amazed or applauding, they start yelling at him and calling him insulting names. Wow, tough crowd.

Wow, and you thought your teachers were harsh.
Of course, Elle just so happens to be in the audience for no reason whatsoever. Unless  this took place before the satellite tracking system was destroyed,  she'd have no way of finding him BEFORE he revealed his abilities. Sure, maybe it was during the brief time that Molly was still with the Company (and awake) before Mohinder and Parkman decided to make a lovenest and settle down, but I doubt it.  This issue has plot holes you could drive a truck through. Regardless, Elle meets Matt backstage and makes him an offer he can't refuse: come with her if he wants to live...er, fit in.

Then she burns down the auditorium.

I'm not kidding. One minute she's telling him she knows where he can fit in, the next minute she uses her powers to set the stage ablaze. Rampant arson and psychotic behavior aside, Matt still goes with her. Man, for someone who's supposed to be smart, he sure gets stupid real quick whenever there's a set of boobs around.
    Image
He definitely should have taken the blue pill.

Of course, Elle promises him that she'll protect him. Apparently protecting him means standing nearby while a team of doctors and scientists experiment on him and torture him. Fun stuff. Later, Elle visits Matt in his room (cell), and brings him a cake. Yup, a friggin' cake. Real food would be nice, letting him go would be nice, not torturing him would be nice... but no. She brings him cake.

Elle talks to him a while and plants one on his cheek, thus continuing her streak of hitting on every single human male locked up  by the Company. I'm guessing that  she doesn't get out to the clubs very often. So, other than the fact that this is yet another new character in an already bloated and unwieldy mythos, there's not much to take away from this week's comic other than "don't trust the Company" and "Elle needs a little lovin' like you wouldn't believe". I mean, c'mon. She's hitting on high school students now. Creeeeeeeepy!

It's a "To Be Continued" so hopefully the next installment(s) add a little more meat to the storyline. Maybe Matt will stop chasing Elle's backside and outsmart his captors. Maybe he turns evil and is going to become a part of the rumored "evil team" in Heroes, Volume 3: Villains.  Or maybe,  like the entire last season, it's going to wander on and on and never really get anywhere.

I guess we'll find out next week.

You can download the PDF of this issue from the main Heroes site (www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels ) or read it online with their flash viewer HERE .

Personally, I don't like either and prefer to read it in .cbr format using a freeware program called CDisplay (downloadable here ).

Didn't catch it at the time (guess I was too disappointed in the lame writing), but Matt has the exact same powers as Charlie, which makes him yet another "remake" (my term for all the people with the exact same powers as established heroes). Adam's a remake, West is a remake, etc.

You'd think that with 40 odd years worth of superhero comics (especially X-Men), the creators of these characters could go a few months without copying one of the powers they've already used.

Was charlie that little southern peach Hiro hooked up with? If so her power was she could remember everything i.e. she would have to ingest the information somehow in order to recall it. After having a quick skim though the 'f*ck me dead 21Mb pdf download!' (Who needs it at press quality FFS?) it gives no indication as to how his power works so it may not be a direct copy of charlie's character but I wouldn't put any money on it.

TBH I'm just counting down the days untill the return of Lost. Do you know how many eps they have in the can Pete? Are we at risk of a split season sue to the ongoing and utterley insane writers strike?

Yes, Charlie was the hot redhead in Odessa that Hiro tried to save again and again.

In the opening blurb of the comic, it says he has the "unique gift of memory". Also, in many of the opening panels, he is reading books and cruising the internet (probably not for porn, like I do), so they probably have the same power and both need to absorb information first.

    As for Lost:

As a result of last seasons lackluster beginnings, Brian K. Vaughan of comic book fame (and a phenomenal writer in his own right) was brought onboard as Executive Story Editor. With his help, the show creators mapped out the entire storyline of the show, down to the episode, from beginning to glorious end, for the final three seasons. Season 4, 5, and 6 will consist of 16 episodes each, originally planned to air back to back, with no repeats during their shortened seasons.

From what I can gather from a few reliable sources, almost all of Season 4 is completely written, some of Season 5 is complete, and Season 6 is still in rough draft form, consisting of only the main plotpoints and some chunks of dialogue.

8 of the 16 episodes in Season 4 have been filmed and are "in the can", as they say. These are the episodes that will begin airing later this month. Unfortunately, the writers strike has caused a lot of people to lose their jobs or to be laid off temporarily, so no work has progressed on the final 8 (it also doesn't help that the show creators are on the picket lines themselves). With any luck, the strike will end soon and these episodes will be completed in time to have a 16 episode continuous season.

If not, the show will break after episode 8, and will resume "whenever".

Have you checked out the new Terminator TV show yet? Any chance you might start reviewing it? Talk about plot holes. They threaten the entire space-time continuum.

Jaybee - Actually, yes. I was one of the lucky few who saw the original pilot when it was leaked to the net last year, and I was genuinely excited about it. I had planned to start reviewing the show starting with the second episode (I reviewed the first episode here).

Then I watched the season premiere and changed my mind. There has been a drastic overhauling of the show from when it was leaked from when it premiered. In the original pilot, Lena Headey was a badass. You could tell that the years of running had turned her into a soldier. She was almost too strict, causing friction between her and John because she was always pushing him. The show was most definitely about Sarah Connor.

In the premiere, they completely revamped her character and made her "softer". Now, Summer Glau is the badass, and the show is focused more on John and the sexy Terminator. Then, in the second episode they revealed that Sarah Connor would have died from cancer had they not traveled into the future to fight Skynet. Way to go, Fox. Make your main character a sissy and then give her cancer. Hell of a way to start a show.

Sure, with any luck Sarah will catch the cancer before it gets serious now that she knows about it, but still. I miss the unbending, unrelenting Sarah Connor. Not so fond of the matronly, caring Sarah Connor.

I watched the pilot months back and although it was OK, Terminator for me needs to be big budget, slick, balls to the wall action and soon to be christian bale. Lena is smokin though and so is the Terminator chick but she's a T-1000 like arnie and I never saw them making a 5'6" 'petite' model. 1 was a classic, 2 was legendary, 3 was some good fun and 4 ...well, we'll have to wait (but McG directing it has me worried). As for the TV series, I just don't think it can cut the mustard.

I'm just hoping that you'll start reviwing Dexter when it comes back. I hear it's doing really well in the states.

Tron - Yeah, the TV show is off to a weak start, and I've all but given up on a new Terminator movie. It was in talks for forever until they finally made T3, and we all know how that turned out. Hopefully, the next one has better luck. As for Christian Bale, I can definitely see him as a good John Connor, especially after his role in Reign of Fire. Just take out the dragon and add robots, and you're good to go! Haha!

I'll definitely be reviewing Season 3 of Dexter. I loved the first season, and held off adding it to the roster in case Season 2 couldn't hold it's own. Thankfully, it did that and more, and after the revelations in the season finale (I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet), you can bet that Season 3 is going to be a hell of a ride.
