Heroes Comic: The Golden Goose

Ok, sing it with me, everyone: "Goooooooold fingah! (bwa-waaa-waaa)"

This weeks issue of the Heroes Graphic Novel takes us to far away Bhutan, where we learn a valuable lesson: don't mess with Company Bob.  The issue involves the whereabouts of Richard Drucker, the focus of the Heroes: Evolution ARG, and quite frankly... I don't really care.

Maybe it's me. Maybe I just don't give a crap about all these marketing gimmicks disguised as fan-powered games. Maybe I just don't like storylines that compete with the main thread of the TV show. Maybe I'm just picky. Whatever the reasons, this issue falls completely flat for me, so it's only fitting that the issue begins with Richard Drucker and his pilot "Goose" (because all pilots are legally required by the FAA to choose handles from Top Gun) crash landing his plane in the mountains of Bhutan.

From what I've gathered from the limited exposure I've had to the Heroes ARG (Alternate Reality Game for those that don't know), it centers around Hana Gittleman, aka "Wireless", who got her start here in the graphic novels, went on to a brief cameo in the show (she was the one who put Parkman and Nuclear Ted together), and then  on to a starring role in the ARG.

Hana's power is the ability to visibly see,  read, transmit, and decode any form of electronic signal. In the graphic novels, she sacrificed her body to destroy the Company's satellite tracking system, in turn uploading her consciousness to the internet.  In the ARG, she frequently uses websites like yamagatofellowship.org and corinthianlasvegas.com (both owned and operated by NBC) to communicate with Micah Sanders and participating members of the ARG. Recently, they came into contact with one Richard Drucker, and the ARG has since centered around discovering his identity and role in the ARG.

This weeks issue begins with the aforementioned plane crash; both Richard and Goose survive. Goose decides to stay there (partly due to the "nice girls") and lives peacefully until the Company comes knocking.

And as we all know, the Company doesn't tend to do things the easy way.

'Would you like a shmoke und a pancake? Flapjack und a shigarette?'

Bob arrives and holds Goose by gunpoint, demanding to know the location of Drucker. Goose pleads with him and says he doesn't know. Goose tells Bob that after waking from the crash, he went to check on Drucker. All he found was an empty bed and Druckers laptop, still on and sitting by the bed. Bob becomes angry and grabs Goose...

...well, let's just say that Goose becomes a little more "valuable" to the Company.

The final panels show the golden Goose (get it? lame) being carried away by members of the Company, and being melted down, Terminator 2 style.  Bob looks on, with the reflection of the laptop in his glasses.

So, what are we supposed to think here? Obviously, they are hinting that Drucker was somehow able to leave Bhutan using his laptop. Since he's managed to communicate with Micah and Hana, both of whom have powers, I'm going to assume that he has some sort of technology-based power as well. More to the point, I don't really see the relevance. Unless they are going to be introducing Drucker into the main show next season, this is just a lame tie-in with the ARG. Sure, it does show us that Bob is a lot more dangerous than we thought, and that he has no qualms about putting someone down if need be, but it just feels like a cross-promotional P.R. stunt thats backfired (at least for me). I actually feel like participating in the ARG even less, if this is what they are rewarded with.

Now, don't get me wrong. I have a soft spot for hot Israeli chicks ( Natalie Portman - call me!) but Hana Gittleman and  her entire storyline need to stay in their own series instead of cluttering up the main one.

And as for Bob? This one's for you , big guy.

You can download the PDF of this issue from the main Heroes site (www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels ) or read it online with their flash viewer HERE .

Personally, I don't like either and prefer to read it in .cbr format using a freeware program called CDisplay (downloadable here ).

WARNING:
Downloading files is wrong and evil and illegal and makes you a terrible person. No one should ever download a file for any reason whatsoever. This website does not endorse illegal down- loading or file-sharing, P2P or otherwise. You should only download files from the original website in whatever crappy and useless format they deem worthy for the likes of you. Also, you should always pay the owners your hard-earned money, because that's how they make their living and if you don't pay them they will starve and their families will be forced into slave camps.

However, if you'd still like to know where you can download this file (y'know, strictly for educational purposes), you can highlight the text in the box below . Or don't.
