Heroes Comic: Pieces of Me

In this week's issue of the Heroes Graphic novel, the list of new characters introduced by the series continues to steadily grow as we're introduced to a man named Ryan Covington who has a reoccuring dream of his own death. As if that wasn't bad enough, in his most recent dream he gets a visit from everybody's favorite little plot device: Sanjog "McGuffin" Iyer. The dream itself is drowning in so much symbolism that it could take weeks and weeks and armies of psychologists to fully interpret and define what each symbol means. Unfortunately, we don't have that kind of time and quite frankly they'd probably all link it so some subconscious Oedipal urge anyway, so I'm going to take a crack at it and - using the infinite resources of the internet - decipher the meaning behind Ryan's dream. Instead of going through the entire issue page-by-page, I've assembled the most obvious of the symbols together in the following slideshow: Please click on the images to view them in a lightbox (some of the descriptions run long): Joomla on osCandy.comHoldiland crŽateur de pcsolutions web sur mesure Falling Falling in a dream can signify a sense of failure or inferiority. It could mean that Ryan somehow blames himself for what happened to his lover or feels that he failed her in some way. The End As Ryan looks out over the city, it\'s clear that the crow symbolism is important. Ryan has taken \"life from death\" - he\'s taken something positive out of a negative situation. The Castle A broken-down and misused castle could signify that Ryan\'s former sense of security and safety is falling apart, or that something he\'s kept locked and guarded is slowly coming to light. The Mirror As Ryan faces his mirror self, this could also be symbolic of Ryan having to face something that\'s been hidden and is now trying to come out. A latent ability, perhaps? A secret from the past? It could also mean that Ryan has to face something about himself that he doesn\'t like. Maybe a dark side? The Funeral In this scene from his past, Ryan is walking away from the funeral of his ex-love, but who is that being consoled in the background? Her brother? Her boyfriend? The Stairs Darkened stairs leading upwards can signify that Ryam wants to \"get to the top\", that he wants to find the purpose and meaning behind these dreams, but will have to go through something unpleasant to do it. The disembodied voice of his dead lover can also symbolize that he will make a mistake or error in judgement. The Crows The old English poem \"One crow for sorrow/Two crows for joy/Three crows for a girl/Four for a boy/Five crows for silver/Six crows for gold/Seven crows for a secret never to be told\" comes to mind, and this could mean that Ryan has a deep, dark secret. The crows, as a symbol of death bringing life to something else, could also mean that Ryan must take something good out of a bad situation. The three leaf clover he\'s wearing - a symbol of the past, present, and future - could also mean that a secret from his past may come back to wreak havoc on his future. Ryan's death is a biggie. It can mean pent up guilt for the death of a loved one, it can be the subconscious trying to bring someone to terms with dying, or it can mean the end of a former period in life. In this case, it could even mean all three. Taken all at once, I have a feeling that the big secret here is going to be the identity of the dead lover. We never see her face, only her eyes and... other parts. I'm inclined to think that Ryan has powers, hence the visit from Sanjog in the first place, and that they somehow played a part in her death, something that Ryan feels guilty about and has since hidden his abilities. I think the dream is preparing him for the end of his previous life, and the beginning of a new one as his powers begin to manifest again - or as his powers are needed once again. But what are his powers? The clover he wears could symbolize the ability to time-travel like Hiro (past, present, and future), the disembodied voice could represent telepathic powers like Matt, the fight with the mirror could mean he has a Nikki-like doppleganger, the falling could represent the ability to fly like Nathan, his death at the end could mean he's a healer like Claire, and the appearance of all the symbols together could mean he could have all of them, like Peter. Or is it all just symbolic, and he has no powers whatsoever? Is this the last we'll see of Ryan Covington? Possibly. This week's issue ended with a definite "The End", so at the very least this arc ends here. However, with all of the recent introductions in the comic series, I can't help but wonder if this is the new and improved "Evolutions". Heroes: Evolutions was supposed to be a series of one-hour episodes to be played between seasons that would introduce new characters and be created and directed by some of the biggest names in Hollywood. The problems with the WGA Strike, and other financial issues forced the series to shut down before even a single episode could be completed. Has it found a new life here in the comic series? It's possible that based on fan appreciation and acceptance, some of these new characters could someday find a place on the television show, much like Hana Gittleman's cameo  in the first season. If true, I'm looking at these issues in a whole new light.
