Heroes Comic: Hana and Drucker's Plot Discovered
Tuesday, 22 January 2008
Heroes Comic #69
In this week's issue of the Heroes Graphic Novel, the loose threads of previous weeks are being slowly tied together. It was a little confusing two weeks back when "The Golden Goose" ended with a "To Be Continued..." and then last week was a seemingly unrelated story about a high school student named Matt Neuenberg, who has superhuman memory (not unlike Hiro's ill-fated love, Charlie).

This week it starts to make some sense.

Since the last issue, Charlie... oops, I mean Matt has begun his work for the Company as a computer programmer. Elle still visits him in his cell/room and taunts him (no cake this time though).  After a little bit of snappy patter between the two, Elle ducks out to grab a donut (what, no waffle reference?) leaving Matt to stew and silently resign himself to a life of imprisonment under the Company's watchful eye... or so he thinks.

Matt notices two unexplained "viruses" in the system and begins to investigate. Meanwhile, inside the mainframe (yeah, it's that kind of issue) Hana Gittleman and Richard Drucker (using T.Monk as his handle, an obvious reference to his love of jazz) are floating around as digital avatars inside cyberspace. My god, did I actually just write that sentence? It looks just as dumb in print as it did in my head.

'...of course, I had to crack the DRM first.'

Drucker, the so-called "Godfather of the Internet" and possible relative of Hana's, explains to her that their avatars are digital representations of their souls, or "Perushas". He also goes on to explain that the internet is actually a sentient universe, and not just a series of tubes like we all assume.

Quite frankly, the whole thing is a little too neo-"Tron" for me.

Basically, it boils down to this: both Drucker and Hana are non-corporeal digital beings that are plotting to bring down the Company mainframe from the inside. For what purpose? Who knows, who cares.

Meanwhile back in the real world, Matt has traced the "viruses" origin to Bhutan, the last known location of Richard Drucker. Apparently the "Godfather of the Internet" never learned how to clone his IP. Way to go, Dickie. Matt gives the information to Elle and mentions it might have something to do with "those blogs" he's discovered: a not-so-veiled reference to the Heroes ARG.

Elle calls her "father" (Bob) to fill him in, even though she thinks it's nothing. However, as we all know by know, it's not nothing, and Bob immediately enacts a "protocol" in which Matt has a set of VR goggles put on him and the entirety of the Company mainframe is downloaded into his brain.

Later, Matt uses all the information stuck in his brain to get a job at the local "Buy More" store and saves the world repeatedly with the help of a super-hot blonde CIA Agent who pretends to be his girlfriend, and Jane from Firefly.

Not Keanu Reeves.

Wait... no. That's another NBC show I'm thinking of.   Sorry.

Later, Matt realizes that the data in his head exceeds his brains safety limits and will kill him if it isn't removed in time. He has to get the data removed, and avoid being killed by yakuza assassins sent after him by Pharmakom Industries. Meanwhile, the Low-tech group led by J-Bone tries to break the missing code to download the cure for "Nerve Attenuation Syndrome (NAS)" which Matt carries in his brain.

Wait... no. Now I'm thinking of a bad Keanu Reeves movie.  Sorry again.

Anyway, moving on:

Before Elle can hit the switch and begin the transfer, Matt asks her how they'll get the data out. "They'll find a way", Elle replies, and begins the transfer. Yikes. Not what you want to hear moments before someone starts playing cut-n-paste with your brain meats.

Of course, I think we all know where this is headed:

You can download the PDF of this issue from the main Heroes site (www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels ) or read it online with their flash viewer HERE .

Personally, I don't like either and prefer to read it in .cbr format using a freeware program called CDisplay (downloadable here ).

WARNING:
Downloading files is wrong and evil and illegal and makes you a terrible person. No one should ever download a file for any reason whatsoever. This website does not endorse illegal down- loading or file-sharing, P2P or otherwise. You should only download files from the original website in whatever crappy and useless format they deem worthy for the likes of you. Also, you should always pay the owners your hard-earned money, because that's how they make their living and if you don't pay them they will starve and their families will be forced into slave camps.

However, if you'd still like to know where you can download this file (y'know, strictly for educational purposes), you can highlight the text in the box below . Or don't.
