![]() Birds of Prey? Trust me, I'm as surprised as you are. This weeks issue of BoP really made me do a full 180 regarding the series, and has set up a conflict years in the making. But it doesn't just stop there - recently relocated to the tech-savvy city of Platinum Flats (Gotham must have been pretty crowded, and Metropolis didn't really need them with "Big Blue" flying around), Oracle (Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl) and the rest of her team find themselves pitted against an all new adversary called The Visionary who has the ability to find your greatest fear and then manipulate it. Think Scarecrow 2.0. But when The Visionary finds he's outmatched, he turns to an unlikely source for help. Well, technically the unlikely source just shows up unnanounced and decides to make it his personal goal in life to burn everything into the ground. That's right - Joker's back. The Joker sets up an obvious trap, hoping to ensnare Oracle's team, and like the good little heroes they are, the Birds jump into the fray anyway. Featuring an awesome battle to save some police that have been taken hostage, the issue feels like the writers have finally stumbled upon the perfect dynamic for the all-girl team. Not to mention, who doesn't like an entire comic filled with gorgeous women in tiny leather outfits knocking out bad guys? Yowza. Misfit surprises the entire team by coming to save the day (teleporting herself and an entire motorcycle directly into the middle of the fight) and it seems like they've all-but-ditched her "whiny brat" phase for a better suited "hero in training" phase. Finally, to top it all off the comic ends with a cliffhanger that should inspire white knuckles in any Bat-fan: having sent the team to a different location to throw off suspicion (a result of the tracker making it back to their base), Barbara Gordon is left all alone, face-to-face with the man who broke into her home, shot her in the spine, almost drove her father insane, and left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair for life: the Joker. The final shot of the Joker standing in the doorway (dressed in a police uniform) with the dramatic lightning and thunder rolling in the background is one of the most ominous images I've seen in a comic all year.
