| CotW: Marvel Apes #1 |

![]() This week Marvel tries to make lightning strike twice with Marvel Apes #1, a brand new series of comics starring your favorite comic book heroes, only in an alternate universe where they're all Apes. Surprisingly, Charlton Heston is nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, unlike the wildly successful Marvel Zombies series that recently closed it's second chapter, Marvel Apes doesn't really have anything going for it, proving once again that in the grand scheme of things: Ninjas > Pirates > Zombies > Monkeys > Robots. I mean, seriously - the main character is Gibbon for crying out loud. Don't know who that is without looking it up on the internet? Join the club. While I applaud Marvel for trying a variation on a popular theme, the whole premise just seems like it's trying to hard. This is the Mary Kate to Zombie's Ashley - similar, but somehow just not quite as attractive. All of the characters are requisitely simian (Dr. Octopus is now Dr. Ooktapus, etc) and it's kinda interesting to see what species of ape each hero turns out to be, but beyond that there's not much here for the average reader. While this will become insanely popular among a small group of fanatics, I just don't see it having the same broad appeal as Marvel Zombies (and subsequently Marvel Zombies 2) had. Of course, that might all change if in the second issue there's suddenly a grizzled, gun-toting homosapian cursing out monkeys and generally commenting on their uncleanliness. I agree with everything but "Monkeys>Robots". Yes, monkeys are cool, but cooler than robots? No chance. I'd like to submit Terminator vs. Planet of the Apes as evidence. Case closed.

Are you kidding me? You take your army of monkeys. I'll take Voltron. Sure, you'll beat up on me for a little while, but then guess what? "Form Blazing Sword!" It's all over. Robots win.

I've pretty much been waiting for this one since the New York Comic Con. I wasn't exactly waiting anxiously or counting down the days, but I've known about it since then and have been looking forward to its eventual arrival. Marvel Apes: the greatest gimmick of all time. Here we have your favorite Marvel superheroes and villains drawn as apes and given ape-names… Spider-Monkey, Doc Ook, Iron Mandrill, and… well, you get the idea.
