![]() To quote the song Mr. Roboto by Styx, "secret, secret, I've got a secret". Wow, did I seriously just quote Styx? I must be losing it. The most recent issue of New Avengers (which has been and continues to be one of my all-time favorite series) finally starts to shed some light on how Skrull agents were able to infiltrate the entire world without anyone knowing or identifying them as fakes, and how they're able to perfectly mimic any superpower on Earth. I'm torn. I want to shout out the ending, but it's so great that I don't want to spoil it here for anyone who hasn't read it yet. Without wanting to spoil anything I will say this: the person responsible is the very last person you would expect. For weeks I have been theorizing and trying to put all the pieces into place (as is my way) and this week all my guesses were not only validated, but proved and improved. The issue manages to answer the smaller "what did they do" question while still keeping the larger "how did they do it" question shrouded in mystery. In flashback after flashback, you see an ambitious Skrull "Priest of the Sciences" convince the Skrull King to pursue a different course of action against the humans, using the most unlikely of their enemies against all the heroes of Earth. Want a hint? Let's just say that someone is going to be damn sorry he turned a handful of the Skrulls into cows. Even more ominous is the "to be continued" at the end, which says that next issue they'll be covering the "House of M" event. After seeing how the Skrulls have plotted and schemed their way through years of secret history up to now, I can't wait to see how they use the turmoil of "House of M" against their enemies. If you've been followed the Secret Invasion at all, or just want to see a brilliant opening scene that pulls a complete 180 on you, pick this book up.
