Amazing Spider-man 568
For the first time since Marvel destroyed Spiderman's continuity with the horrific "Brand New Day" story arc, I am actually hopeful for this comic.

In recent months, we've been subjected to the loss of Peter Parker's adulthood - a deal with Mephisto to save his Aunt May resulted in a retcon of the entire Spiderman series. He is no longer married to Mary Jane, he has no direction in life, JJ Jameson no longer owns the Daily Bugle, Peter no longer works there, his identity was never revealed during the Civil War,  he can't hold down a job, they've introduced a bevy of forgetable villains, and so on and so on.

Basically, they  turned him into an irresponsible tool.

Regardless, this issue feels... better. Romita Jr is back at the pencils, so it once again looks like a superhero comic, not just some tween romance pulp trash like it has in recent months. The intro almost disavows the last few months of contrived plots and storylines and once again puts Spidey back into the mainstream Marvel universe as he runs headlong into an inevitable conflict with the government-run Thunderbolts team, led by none other than Norman "Green Goblin" Osbourne. As an unregistered hero (remember? he never unmasked during Civil War), Spiderman has probably been on a very short grudge match list for "Stormin' Norman". Hell, they even manage to get Peter Parker a job again - working for Ben Ulrich's Front Line alongside Robbie Robertson. If the goal was to wash away the stench of the last few months of Spiderman comics, Marvel is off to a hell of a start.

I may be wrong here. They may have 3 or 4 issues of classic Spiderman action, and then go back to the current Spiderman status quo of awkward romantic entanglements, job hunting, and pining over coffee with Harry Osbourne (oh, did I mention they brought him back? It's like 1990 all over again).  However,  I think I speak for all Spiderman fans everywhere here when I say that I'm liking this new direction and I hope it continues.

Oh, and screw "Brand New Day".

Worst.     Idea.      Ever.
