The new straight-to-DVD Superman Animated movie, "Superman Doomsday" released it's first trailer today, and I have to say that despite the unneccesarily cheesy trailer, I'm actually looking forward to this.
I also get a little offtrack, as is my right as a comic book junkie and general miscreant.
Based on the best selling comic book of all time "The Death of Superman", the new DVD is entitled "Superman: Doomsday" and is scheduled to hit stores late 2007/early 2008.
As I said in the previous paragraph, the trailer is pretty cheesy ("Superman in love! Superman in Battle! bleeaaarghh...), but I'm pretty sure that's Dan LaFontaine doing the voiceover work, so kudos to the creators. If you're going to have a voiceover, he's definitely the guy you want to do it. If you don't know who Dan LaFontaine is, he's the original "movie voice" guy. You've probably heard him in thousands of trailers for almost every type of movie imaginable.
I'm not sure how they are going to pull this off. It appears that Supes will be appearing in his black costume, but I didn't see Vindicator, Superboy or "terminator supes" in the trailer. I'm hoping it stays true to the original story, but knowing the state of comic book films lately, I'm pretty sure it will be a watered down version for the masses.
Which leads me to a completely offtopic question: If the book was so popular and people love the story so much, what other reason could you possibly have to change the story other than you want to make a movie about it that makes some fast cash for your studio without having to actually worry about things like quality or integrity?
That's probably a question for another day, I guess. Enjoy the trailer!
