    Bow Before Tim Kring
    Wednesday, 07 November 2007
Open Letter to Tim Kring, creator of Heroes:
    Image
Ok, so that may be a little more dramatic than I had hoped, but after reading the most recent interview with Tim Kring on EW.com, I not only respect the man again, I'm truly confident that he will do his best from this point on not to let the fans down (as long as this pesky strike wraps up soon).

When asked about Season 2's lagging ratings and general fan dissaproval, Kring does something that's simply unheard of in Hollywood: he takes full accountability for his failures.

What the NBC Writers Room looks like now.

In this age of Lucasian denial ("...the original Star Wars wasn't good enough") it's almost shocking to hear a creator frankly discussing his works from the fan's point of view. What's more important is that Tim Kring actually understands the fan's point of view.

    *starts the slow clap*

Kring fielded a variety of questions, and with each answer it became more and more apparent that not only does Kring fully realize the problems with the current season, he has a plan in place to fix them.

On this season's pace: "We assumed the audience wanted season 1...We made a mistake.''

On Peter Petrelli and the Virus:
"We took too long to get to the big-picture story."

    On the new Heroes:
"[They] shouldn't have been introduced in separate story lines that felt unattached to the show."

    On Claire & West:
"I've seen more convincing romances on TV,'' and ''In retrospect, I don't think romance is a natural fit for us.''

And finally, when asked if he had a message for the fans:

The message is that we've heard the complaints — and we're doing something about it.

Kring has also stated that once the strike is resolved, he would like to take what his staff has learned from this season and apply it to a "rebooted" Heroes: Volume 3.

That's unheard of in general, I think. I can't think of a single other time um... ever, that the producer or creator of a show has honestly critiqued their work. Usually you just get the empty promise "it will ramp up soon" or "I think the fans will be pleased with where we're going" or even worse, you get the rare "we don't make it for the fans".

Now I really want to see Volume 3.

So, by the sounds of the interview, we can all look forward to Season 2 as being an abbreviated bad dream. I agree with you, Peter: nice to see some honesty from Mr. Kring. Frankly, though, I think he's been distanced from his creation and relegated to - his words - "managing a brand". I think they'll give him back some control now, let him spend some money on effects - fewer green screens - and make Vol. 3 something to write mom about. He could do worse than hire you as a lead writer.

Make that a topic of a future post - what would you do with Heroes, Peter?

I was surprised to read just how honest Kring was in his critique of the season as well. I think some of that may be his 'distance' from the genre. After all, he isn't a scifi geek fanboy - he understands pop culture, and generally lets the writers do the writing, while he does the 'massaging'. I wonder if they took too much energy this year trying to cross-index-market all things Heroes, with websites, comics, product placements, etc. Perhaps he spent too much time marketing, not enough time overseeing. I think one of the strengths of Heroes vol 1 was that balance between geek and pop sensibility.
But his interview was uncanny. It's as if he was reading this website. Perhaps he was, eh?
BTW, can anyone tell me what happened to Heroes origins? I read somewhere that it was canned. Wasn't Kevin Smith attached? Whazzup?

Hahaha, Tom! This site isn't big enough to hold the combined volumes (1-12) of my opinions about how they should write Heroes for the next twenty seasons. I've even considered spin-offs (Future Hiro (badass goatee intact) travels through time fighting Kensei throughout different periods of history and generally kicking ass and taking names) and new characters (like a teenage hero named Ryan who can adjust his molecular density by thought alone, turning himself lighter than air or denser than steel, and who would start out rather nerdy and unsure of himself, but become a stronger character and an eventual love interest for Claire).

Let's just say I've given it some thought and leave it at that.

Boomer: Yes, Heroes: Origins has been put on hold indefinitely due to the writers strike. It had both Kevin Smith and Eli Roth attached to create and direct episodes (I would love to see both of those for vastly different reasons). According to what I've read, it was a combination of not having writers to work on it, sagging ratings for Heroes second season, and struggles with financial backing that sunk it. They have said that they would like to come back to the idea at a later date, but for now, they are focusing on the season at hand.

@The Ash Bringer - Yes, it's part of the Heroes 360 game (or is it called Heroes Evolutions now?). The HG stands for Hana Gittleman, who was introduced in the graphic novel and had a small bit part in the show last season. Also, if you go to www.yamagatofellowship.org and watch the Takezo Kensei documentary you also get to view a conversation between Micah and Hana. Cool stuff.
